Babadağ sees 7,421 paragliders over the Bayram holiday

Babadağ Air Sports and Recreation Center, which is one of the best paragliding centers in the world, attracted 7,421 people who made a paragliding flight over the nine day Bayram holiday.

Babadağ, which has a principal summit at an elevation of 1,969 metres, welcomes thousands of local and foreign tourists who want to paraglide every year.

Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FTSO) President Osman Çıralı stated that the reservations were very good this year with 32,406 flights so far, five thousand flights more compared to the same period last year. 162,000 flights were carried out in total last year, this year, the target is 200,000.

Çıralı went on to say “Work on the Skywalk cable car project continues and we plan to open it in July 2020″.

Volunteer students clean up the islands and bays in Fethiye

A group of volunteer students and hotel employees collected 122 KG of garbage during a coastal clean up around Kızılada (Red Island) and Kalafat Bay on Tuesday.

The clean up was organised by the Turkish Marine Environment Protection Agency (TURMEPA) and the Fethiye Branch of the Chamber of Shipping.

Ersin Ozer from TURMEPA, said in a statement to journalists, ” It was mainly plastic, glass, food containers and fishing supplies that were collected. A glass bottle takes 4,000 years to biodegrade and a plastic bottle, 450 years. Plastic never completely disappears as it is broken down into micro plastics that are eaten by marine life and in turn consumers, us. We must prevent all kinds of waste that we use in daily life from entering nature.”

Gül Gencer, 11th grade student of Mustafa Kemal Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School who took part in the clean up said “We should tell everyone that we should not pollute our environment. We gathered all the items we use in daily life. There were toys, food containers, plastic and glasses. We need to keep our nature clean for the future”

Airbus submerged in Turkey’s Edirne for diving tourism

Curious locals rushed to take photographs of an Airbus A330 being submerged in Saros Bay in the northwestern Turkey’s Edirne on Friday. 

The giant plane, which was reassembled in the city after it was transported from Antalya, will be a major attraction for diving tourism.

Local authorities said it was the world’s largest airplane ever submerged for diving tourism. It took four hours for the crews to sink the 90-ton passenger plane. The decommissioned aircraft was brought to Edirne under the sponsorship of Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline Project (TANAP) and as part of a deal with a local tourism union.

It was towed on large rubber boats to the spot where it was submerged. The boats were then deflated to allow the plane sink intact.

The aircraft is now sitting at a depth of 30 metres, around half a nautical mile away from the shore.

Books for bottles to fight plastic waste

A pilot project launched as part of the zero waste campaign of first lady Emine Erdoğan encourages children to collect plastic bottles in exchange for books.

It started on Wednesday in Safranbolu, a historic town in northern Turkey’s Karabük province. Pupils in a local primary school who collected plastic bottles and deposited them in waste bins at the school were awarded books by the local governorate and education authority.

Safranbolu Governor Fatih Ürkmezer said they placed waste bins for the separate disposal of plastic, paper and other materials in all the schools in the town and collected more than 50,000 plastic bottles in a short period of time.

The zero waste campaign launched by Emine Erdoğan in 2017 has attracted nationwide support. Thanks to the campaign, Turkey is rediscovering its potential to be a more eco-friendly country, despite heavy industrialization in recent years.

Women’s volleyball team beats US and Poland in FIVB Nations League in China

The Turkish national women’s volleyball team netted an easy 3-0 win against the U.S. on Tuesday in their Week 4 game at the FIVB Nations League in Jiangmen, China.

The Sultans of the Net, as they are known in Turkey, won in three straight sets – 25-15, 25-17 and 27-25 – picking up their ninth victory in ten games. Turkey’s Ebrar Karakurt was the top scorer with 23 points. She was followed by Fatma Yıldırım with 12.

On the closing day of Week four of the tournament in Jiangmen, China, Turkey went on to defeat Poland in 5 sets (22-25, 18-25, 25-16, 25-20, 15-12).

“Turkey’s Ebrar Karakurt made the list of players to have scored 30 points or more in a single match,” the FIVB said on their official website. 

With 10 wins in 12 matches, Turkey reached 29 points in the tournament. 

In their last three matches in the 2019 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League, Turkey will face Belgium on Tuesday, Italy on Wednesday and Brazil on Thursday.

The team won silver in the first edition of the tournament held last year and aims for gold this year. It missed last year after losing in the final against the U.S. The Turkish national women’s volleyball team has come a long way from the sixth spot in FIVB World Championship in 2010 and boasts two medals in the European Championships since 2003.
