Swedish scientists invited to Fethiye to investigate algal bloom

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 17 August 2019

Fethiye Municipality, Muğla Municipality and the Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation have invited two Swedish scientists to advise on the algal bloom in Fethiye Bay. The scientists are involved in the Project to clean the Baltic Sea by improving the treatment of wastewater and reducing phosphorus levels. Phosphorus, in too large quantities, is the primary reason for the flowering of blue green algae in the Baltic Sea, now a regular and undesirable summer phenomena.

Fethiye has experienced this phenomena for the first time this summer and their advice, based on experience of dealing with a similar problem, will be invaluable in helping to resolve the issue in Fethiye.

Fethiye Mayor, Alim Karaca said, “We cannot resolve this problem via posts on social media. The cleaning of the Gulf is a problem that is too big for Fethiye Municipality alone to resolve therefore we will work together with all relevant institutions to find a solution”.
