Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 12 October 2019

Oceans of Hope are a charity based in the UK which organises sailing events for people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

MS is a chronic condition where the body attacks the brain and nervous system, leading to physical, cognitive and emotional challenges, many of which are not always obvious and are difficult to explain. Oceans of Hope brings together people with MS into a sailing environment, working collectively to overcome these challenges. Time on board a Challenge vessel enables people with MS to do new things they never thought they could do, leads to increased confidence and an improvement in wellbeing, giving hope for the future.

You don’t need to have any experience of sailing – the challenges are open to all with MS.

Two weeks ago, Robert Munns, Managing Director and organiser of Oceans of Hope Challenges brought the challenge to Fethiye.

30 MS patients from 10 countries joined the Oceans of Hope Challenge at Ece Marina in Fethiye, from where they crewed the boats and sailed around the bays of Fethiye and Göcek.

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 12 October 2019

A fisherman who kicked and punched a rare shark before releasing it back into the wild in the coastal town of Erdek in the northwestern province of Balıkesir has been fined.

The four-meter-tall and 700-kilogram shark was caught by the fishermen on Thursday in the Marmara Sea. The fisherman, whose identity has not been revealed, physically harmed the shark before it was released back to the sea.

The incident was recorded on a cell phone by another fisherman.

Several individuals and institutions, including the Turkish Marine Research Foundation (TÜDAV), stated that the animal was subjected to violence and filed a complaint with the Presidential Communication Center (CİMER), according to Demirören News Agency.

The Agriculture and Forestry Ministry, who dealt with the complaint, identified the fisherman and fined him in accordance with the Law on the Protection of Animals.

TÜDAV said the shark was a “thresher shark,” which is listed as an endangered species.

It is forbidden to treat animals cruelly or beat them, according to Turkish laws. Such acts are punished with an administrative fine.
