Charity News & Events – week ending 1 November 2019
Lexie and Iki

Following the bereavement of Peter Shackleford, a resident who lived in Uzumlu, his family were unsure what to do about his two dogs, Lexie and Iki. A close friend of Peter suggested to the family they contact Denise Atkins and Rhian Robinson who run the Uzumlu Dog Adoption Group to see if they could help and try to rehome the two dogs locally, however, despite their best efforts no one has stepped forward and the decision was made to try and rehome the dogs in the UK.

To help pay for the transportation, veterinary fees and inoculations for the two dogs, Denise Atkins started a Gofundme page which very quickly gained a number of generous donations and stands at £2000. Also a fundraiser was quickly organised which the Winehouse in Uzumlu hosted on Saturday 26th October. The event was a sellout and guests enjoyed an excellent authentic 3 course Indian meal and were entertained by Rhythm and Booze, a local group of expats. 2020TL was raised on the night plus other donations making a total of 2960TL. Thanks also to Huss Ramadan for conducting an auction and thanks to Rhythm and Booze for entertaining us.

An update was given to the guests:

Lexie and Iki are currently being cared for by Peter’s neighbours, Helen and Kaz. Between them they are feeding, providing cuddles and poop clearing until mid-November when the dogs will go to foster carers, Janine and Steve Hart. They will stay with Janine and Steve until mid-March when they should be able to travel to the UK.

A big thank you to those who are helping and assisting, Dean Baker and Keith Edwards who are coordinating the travel arrangements. It is hoped that the GoFundMe will cover the costs of foster care, veterinary care, vaccinations, state vet, blood tests and travel with perhaps a small contingency in case of unexpected costs.

All accountancy will be transparent and records kept. There is a dedicated Facebook Page to follow the progress and any updates for Lexie and Iki.

However the best news was kept till last, a call was received from Peter’s sister, Anne Shackleford, who has agreed to adopt Lexie and Iki in the UK. She knows the dogs but never thought it would be possible due to the cost involved.

The people that helped Peter’s family received this note from the family:

We would like to say a huge heartfelt thank you to everyone that has been, and continues to be involved in the care of our much loved dogs Lexie and Iki. In particular, the drive and passion shown by Denise Atkins and Rhian Robinson in arranging absolutely everything, from vaccinations to foster care and coordinating travel arrangements has been outstanding. Their knowledge, drive and compassion has certainly been invaluable in what is already a very difficult time for us. We have also been overwhelmed by the response to the GoFundMe page, without which ongoing care for the dogs would not be possible. Whether people have shared the page or made a donation, however big or small it has all contributed and for that we will always be grateful. Your kindness and generosity is something we certainly will never forget. – Louise and Neil Shackleford.

This is a story of a community coming together in time of need and all involved in helping Peter’s family should rightfully be proud of their achievements.

Çalış Children’s Charity (3C’s) Autumn coffee morning and fashion show

Thank you to Cathy Harrower for the update and photographs.

On Thursday 24th October, the 3C’s second coffee morning and fashion show of this year was held at Akkent Garden Hotel and Mandalin Restaurant.

These twice yearly events have proved to be very popular and many people use them as a great opportunity to meet friends and support the charity at the same time.

There were masses of wonderful home baked cakes and savoury items, all provided by our volunteers and friends. The new 3C’s calendar was on sale, featuring photographs from around our beautiful area. This year, the calendar covers an 18-month period from June 2019 to December 2020. The stalls also sold hand-made soft toys, china and decorative items for the home. The raffle was very popular with some great prizes.

Cakes and savouries – all provided by 3C’s volunteers and friends.

The keenly awaited Fashion show was compered by Graham Haley who produced a great selection of music for us.  The 12 models showed over 70 outfits and did a fabulous job displaying the clothes. All of the outfits come to us as donations. Without your kind donations none of this would be possible, and many items were snapped up straight after the show.

Thank you to all of the volunteers and committee members who worked so hard to produce such a successful event, and special thanks to Graham who kept the whole show rolling.

The 3C’s raised a fabulous total of 5,171 tl on the day. As we aim to support as many children with medical needs, or schools with special requests in our local area, this makes a wonderful addition to our funds.

Also thanks to the management and staff of Akkent Garden for their support and to all of the audience who helped create a fabulous atmosphere.
