Barrier-Free Area awards for disabled-friendly businesses in Fethiye
President of the Fethiye branch of the Turkey Disabled Association, Aydoğan Arslan, met with Fethiye Governor, Muzaffer Şahiner on Thursday to discuss the Barrier-Free Area Flag project that will allow disabled citizens to access shops, restaurants, cafes and hotels more easily.
Inspections will be carried out and disabled-friendly businesses will be presented with plaques by the Municipality of Fethiye and the Fethiye Governor on December 3 and May 10-16.
Businesses that are not diasbled-friendly will be identified and informed of the reasons why they don’t qualify for the award, giving them an opportunity to make changes.

Second International “Our Seas and Colors Underwater Painting Workshop and Symposium” held in Fethiye
14 artists from Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iran, Uzbekistan, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Georgia donned their wetsuits to paint pieces while diving during the second International “Our Seas and Colors Underwater Painting Workshop and Symposium” held in Fethiye last week.
One artist painted a portrait of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of modern Turkey, whilst underwater.
The aim of the workshop is to raise awareness of the threats facing the oceans and preserve our natural resources for future generations.
Fethiye Governor Muzaffer Şahiner, Mayor Alim Karaca and representatives of non-governmental organizations attended the opening ceremony.

Turkey’s leading conglomerate pledges to stop using single-use plastic
Turkey’s leading conglomerate Koç Holding promised on Thursday to stop using single-use plastic products by the end of 2020.
Koç Holding A.Ş is the largest industrial conglomerate in Turkey, and the only company in the country to enter the Fortune Global 500 list. Their companies include businesses in Tourism, White Goods, Food, Construction, cars and many more – that’s a lot of plastic.
Levent Çakıroğlu, the CEO of the company, said in a press release on Thursday, “We are committed to stop disposable plastic consumption in all Koç Group companies and organizations, with over 90,000 colleagues.”
Following the Istanbul Biennial art exhibition, which was themed on ocean plastic waste and was sponsored by Koç Holding, Çakıroğlu said, “The amount of plastic waste that we could not deal with turned into pollution which threatens the environment and human health.”
He pointed out that plastic waste now covers over three million square meters (some 32 million square feet) in the Pacific Ocean and underlined that to stop using single-use plastic products, the company would find alternatives and increase reuse and recycling.
“This promise is only the beginning, we will increase our efforts on the issue of plastic use,” he added.

Ancient Pinocchio unearthed in western Turkey
Cave paintings dating back 1,500 years, including one of fictional character Pinocchio, have been discovered during an archaeological excavation in the ancient city of Laodicea located in Denizli in western Turkey..
One of the paintings, a faint carving into a rock wall, has been named Ancient Pinocchio.
Celal Şimşek, a Turkish archaeologist leading the excavation, said: “There is a man with a long nose in the first painting. The second one has a Roman bust and the last one shows a cleric. The long-nosed man in the first painting looks like Pinocchio,” referring to the character of a fairytale where a puppet earns the right to become a real boy by proving his truthfulness. Every time he lies his nose grows longer.
Şimşek said the painting represents daily life of people in the 4th century.
“We can consider this long-nosed man as Pinocchio of the ancient ages. Lies and truths are concepts which have emerged over time. This man could have been drawn to depict liars back in the days,” he said.
Laodicea, registered on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, is the site of one of the seven churches mentioned in the Bible.

Istanbul Airport named ‘Airport of Year’
The Istanbul Airport was named as the “Airport of the Year” by readers of a U.K.-based magazine, the airport operator firm IGA announced on Tuesday.
According to a press release by IGA, the Istanbul Airport received majority of votes from readers of the International Airport Review, beating several international airports such as Heathrow (the U.K.), Sydney (Australia) and Changi (Singapore).
Kadri Samsunlu, the CEO of IGA, said the airport gained a significant momentum to be a global hub with its unique architecture, strong infrastructure and high-technology.
While the Istanbul Airport was awarded in the category of “Readers’ Choice: Airport of the Year”, the magazine also announced India’s Kempegowda International Airport as the “Most Sustainable Initiative”, Abu Dhabi International Airport’s Midfield Terminal Complex as the “Innovative Design Project”, Scotland’s Edinburgh Airport as the “Best Accessibility Initiative”, and the capital London’s Gatwick Airport as the “Best Airside Efficiency”.
The Istanbul Airport, whose first phase officially opened in October 2018, took over air traffic from the former main Ataturk Airport on April 6.
The airport is projected to serve 200 million passengers annually with a full capacity after the completion of all four phases with six runways by 2028.
