Plans for new pier in Karagözler under discussion

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 17 November 2019

Zoning plans for a 100 meter long pier in Karagözler are currently under discussion. The plan includes the filling in of 86 thousand square meters of sea to allow construction of the concrete pier where yachts will be able to moor.

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 17 November 2019

The plan is opposed by Fethiye Ecological Living Association (FetDer) highlighting recent problems caused by concretisation of DSI channels allowing chemical waste from agricultural sources to reach the Gulf without natural filtration, increasing pollution.

Biologist Ulaş Kiper said, “As Fethiye Ecological Living Association, we review factors such as boat waste, chemical and organic waste coming from the channels and wastewater treatment plants with insufficient capacity at certain periods and we are working to improve this. A reinforced concrete pier will increase pressure on the Gulf, making it very difficult for it to be cleared by natural processes in the future.”

Government passes amended Accommodation Tax bill

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 17 November 2019

The Accommodation Tax, introduced as part of a proposal to increase tax revenues, was passed by the government on Thursday.

The Accommodation Tax was amended to two percent of the daily accommodation charge. The draft proposal suggested a charge on a per person basis, with the costs determined by how many stars the hotel has, from 6 ($1) to18 liras ($3.20) per night.

However, the authorities revised the draft by changing the tax regime from preset rates to two percent of the daily accommodation price after objections from Turkish hoteliers, saying that it would severely affect domestic tourism.

No accommodation tax will be charged for those under 12 years of age.

The President has the authority to increase this rate by one fold or to reduce it by half and to determine different rates within these limits.

The funds collected from the tax will go directly to the government.

3D images of Noah’s Ark to be shown in documentary

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 17 November 2019

The ship-shaped formation discovered half a century ago in eastern Turkey has opened new horizons about Noah’s Ark with its three-dimensional images.

Discovered in 1959 in the Doğubayazıt district of Ağrı province by Captain Ilhan Durupınar, an expert cartographer, Noah’s Ark, also mentioned in the holy books, is a legend for some and a fact waiting to be proved for others.

Computer Engineer and Archeologist Andrew Jones and Geophysicist John Larsen modelled the formation three-dimensionally to examine it thoroughly and shared their findings with Cem Sertesen, the director of the documentary Noah’s Ark, released in 2017. Sertesen will incorporate the footage into his new documentary Noah’s Ark-2.

Sertesen said. “These are actual images of what could be Noah’s Ark gathered by sending electric signals underground via cables. They are neither fake nor simulation. They show an entire ship buried underground.”
