Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 08 December 2019

Businesses in Fethiye suffered a loss of more that 150 million TL as a result of the bankruptcy of Thomas Cook in September.

In an interview with FRT Television, FETOB President Bülent Uysal said “At the beginning of the year we evaluated the previous seasons in the area and the number of airline seats planned for Dalaman airport, from which we forecast the expected numbers for the 2019 season. We expected an increase of around 200,000 tourists compared to last year. Up to 23 September everything was going really well and the numbers were rising as forecast. Compared to 2018 we are still on the rise but the problem we have is that businesses are unable to collect the monies owed from Thomas Cook.

Turkey switches to plain packaging to deter smokers

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 08 December 2019

A regulation for plain packaging came into force on Thursday as Turkey seeks to reduce sales of cigarette and tobacco products and discourage smokers with less shiny packaging.

The Agriculture and Forestry Ministry overseeing the implementation of the regulation announced that manufacturers will begin producing plain packs for cigarettes and similar products while sales of older, branded packages will end on Jan. 5, 2020.

The move is expected to serve as a detraction for would-be smokers, especially among the youth, and curb tobacco and cigarette sales. It is also the latest step in a massive government campaign, which started in 2009, to reduce the number of smokers in the country, once the subject of a notorious expression, “smoking like a Turk.” More here…

Turkey’s economy rebounds to generate year on year growth

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 08 December 2019

Turkey’s economy continued its gradual recovery from recession in the third quarter of this year, posting positive year-on-year growth for the first time in 2019. The economy grew 0.9% year-on-year between July and September of this year, Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) data showed Monday.

Turkey suffered its first recession in a decade after a painful currency crisis that struck the country in the summer of 2018, which wiped almost 30 per cent off the value of the lira.

Inflation, which had become a pressing issue for the Turkish economy over the last year, dropped significantly throughout the course of this year after topping 25% in September last year amid high fluctuations in exchange rates.

It had eased to 9.26% in September, when it hit single digits for the first time since July 2017 before dropping to 8.55% in October, its lowest since December 2016.

Nigel Rendell, a London-based Europe, Middle East and Africa analyst for Medley Global Advisors, projected Turkey’s economy will grow 1% on a quarterly basis between October and December.

Touching on the government’s targets for next year, Rendell said: “The economy will strengthen next year, given the interest rate declines and the state banks’ willingness to promote lending, but we expect economic growth to be around 3.5%.”
