More than 200 people have died from COVID-19 in Turkey, which has ramped up tests to more than 15,000 a day, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca announced Tuesday.
Koca shared the latest figures on Twitter, saying that 46 people had died in the last 24 hours, raising the country’s overall toll to 214. With 2,704 more cases of the novel coronavirus, the total has reached 13,531.
Turkey began taking precautions against the novel coronavirus even before the outbreak and is taking new measures with each passing day, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said late Tuesday.
“Intercity travel in Turkey is down by 98.9%, which shows our precautions have worked. We have also quarantined 50 towns and villages in 21 cities [across the country]. We are trying to take extreme measures before it’s too late.”
Soylu also said that false information on social media will not go unpunished. “We have detected 2,863 social media accounts spreading false information about the COVID-19 outbreak in our country”
Soylu also called on the Turkish people to stay home.

50 towns, villages and neighborhoods in 21 cities quarantined
We’ve had a lot of comments from readers asking for more information about the geographical spread of Covid-19 in Turkey.

Entrances and exits are closed and food aid is being provided to citizens in the following towns: Malatya, Bartın, Çorum, Bitlis, Erzincan, Tunceli, Bayburt, Kütahya, Gümüşhane, Çankırı, Çanakkale, Giresun, Yozgat, Kars, Sivas , Artvin, Rize, Trabzon, Zonguldak and Van.
Health teams are monitoring the temperature of citizens in the quarantined locations and those with high fever are taken to the relevant hospitals.

Authorities are considering additional measures to curb intercity travel particularly in the country’s three largest cities, Istanbul, Ankara and İzmir, in the face of the threat the coronavirus may spread from the populous provinces towards towns in other parts of Turkey.
Intercity travels are currently subject to local authorities’ special permission. Potential travelers need to apply to commissions to obtain approval.
Officials from the Interior Ministry have taken additional actions after having realized that people who do not own a car are trying to leave Istanbul on unlicensed taxis. People also use the cars of their relatives and friends to travel to other cities.
