Turkey sings national anthem from home to mark Children’s Day
Every year, Turkey commemorates the first gathering of the Turkish Grand National Assembly which took place in 1920.
On Thursday, Turkey celebrated the nation’s April 23 National Sovereignty and Children’s Day and the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Turkish parliament.
Every year April 23 is celebrated with ceremonies nationwide with children performing in the country’s stadiums and streets. This year, due to measures to curb the spread of coronavirus, celebrations took place at home.

At 21:00, the people of Turkey took their places at the windows and balconies of their homes to sing the national anthem, Istiklal Marşı (March of Freedom), while waving Turkish flags.
April 25 is Anzac Day and this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, for the first time ever, Anzac Day events in Turkey were canceled.
President Erdoğan commemorated the fallen of the Çanakkale Land Battles on its 105th anniversary in a statement on Saturday saying, “Throughout our history, our aim has always been to maintain our independence and establish peace. Despite all the difficulties and troubles, we are determined to continue this struggle until we substitute peace, tranquility and human values to war, terror, violence.”
Praising the fallen and veterans for their heroism, he called for global peace.
“We reiterate our call for peace to the whole world on the occasion of the 105th anniversary of the Canakkale Land Battles.”
The president also commemorated all the heroes, especially Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who demonstrated great strength in Çanakkale.
Tens of thousands of soldiers died in one of the world’s most ferocious battles 105 years ago in Ottoman Turkey during World War I.
The battle stretched from April 25, 1915, to Jan. 9, 1916.

Safranbolu’s 400-year-old hidden tunnels to become tourist destination

The 400-year-old hidden tunnels in Turkey’s northern Karabük province’s Safranbolu district, known for its uniquely preserved traditional Ottoman-Turkish architecture and added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1994, are slated to become a tourist destination.
The three separate well-preserved tunnels have differing lengths and are made up of cut stones and arches. They are located in the historical district, which is home to Ottoman houses, baths, mosques, fountains and bridges, as well as traditional houses built between the 18th and 20th centuries.
These tunnels, which were constructed to fulfill the drinking water and sewer functions in the district, pass under the bazaars of blacksmiths and coppersmiths, the Cinci Inn and Izzet Mehmet Pasha Mosque.
Turkey slashes rates in bid to shore up economy against coronavirus
Turkey’s central bank has slashed its benchmark interest rate for the eighth time in a row in a move that analysts warned risked piling further pressure on the lira.
The bank cut its one-week repo rate by 1 percentage point to 8.75 per cent on Wednesday, double the scale of the cut that economists surveyed by Bloomberg had expected. The move will lower the cost of borrowing for Turkish businesses and households, supporting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s efforts to use cheap credit as a tool to combat the economic fallout from the coronavirus crisis.
The central bank said that inflation was likely to be lower than previously forecast in the months ahead due to the plunge in oil prices and a drop in demand because of the coronavirus crisis.
The lira hovered close to the symbolically important threshold of TL7 against the dollar after Wednesday’s rate decision, at one point reaching TL6.9987 before reversing those losses.

Turkey plans to resume its football Super League matches in mid-June and the games may be played without spectators, Turkish media quoted the head of the clubs’ association as saying on Friday.
Turkish football, basketball and volleyball leagues, which were among the last to continue playing matches, were suspended on March 17 due to the Covid-19 pandemic after Ankara came under international and domestic pressure to postpone them.
“We have a provisional decision to launch the Super League matches in the week of June 12-14,” public broadcaster TRT Haber quoted the Turkish clubs’ association chairman Mehmet Sepil as saying.
“The base scenario is that Super League and Turkey Cup matches be completed by July 26,” he was cited as saying, adding that matches may be staged without spectators.
