COVID-19 cases, deaths continue to slow in Turkey

The number of people who have died from COVID-19 in Turkey has risen by 65 in the last 24 hours to 3,461, Health Ministry data showed Monday, as a slowdown in deaths and confirmed cases continued.

The overall number of cases rose by 1,614 to 127,659, the data showed, the highest total outside Western Europe, the United States and Russia.

A total of 68,166 people have so far recovered from the new coronavirus, which causes the respiratory disorder COVID-19.

The number of tests conducted in Turkey in the past 24 hours stood at 35,771, raising the total number of tests during the outbreak to more than 1.17 million.

President Erdoğan reveals coronavirus normalization plan

Turkey will start easing coronavirus containment measures as of May 11, President Tayyip Erdoğan said, lifting intercity travel restriction in seven provinces and easing a curfew imposed for senior and youth citizens.

In a televised address on Monday (May 4), the president announced that Turkey will gradually take steps to start post-coronavirus normalization as the pace of the spread of the virus has slowed over the past two weeks.

WHO hails Turkey’s efforts against COVID-19 at nursing homes

Turkey has set an example for the world with its COVID-19 measures at nursing homes, a World Health Organization (WHO) official has said.

Dr. Irshad Ali Shaikh, the international organization’s health security director in Turkey said Turkey’s policy for elderly care and measures against COVID-19 were “very impressive.” He said WHO decided to compile a report on measures adopted by Turkey for nursing homes and release it so other countries can benefit from it.

Huge flock of sheep overruns street during coronavirus lockdown in Turkey

Scores of sheep crossed empty streets in Samsun, northern Turkey, as people stayed indoors over the weekend during the coronavirus lockdown. Videos shared on social media show the animals following a shepherd along empty roads in the city, with some stopping occasionally to graze on grass verges.
