2 million hit the road after travel restrictions lifted in Turkey

Some 2 million people hit the road on Monday as inter-city travel restrictions were lifted in Istanbul and other cities.

The government eased restrictions starting last week as part of a gradual normalization process. It was a relief for people in more than a dozen cities, particularly in Istanbul where millions were confined to their homes. Fresh off the latest weekend curfew, people boarded buses, planes or got behind the wheel to go to vacation resorts or their hometowns to visit their relatives.

According to a report by Hürriyet newspaper, people traveled mostly to cities in the Aegean and Mediterranean region, home to popular resort towns like Bodrum, Çeşme, Marmaris and Alanya.

Early closure of schools and permission for children, otherwise subject to an ongoing curfew, for travel with their parents increased the number of travelers.

Police and gendarme teams set up checkpoints on the roads, slowing down the traffic. In every city, travelers are allowed in only after their body temperatures are measured. Those with high temperatures are not admitted and directed to the nearest hospital.

10 new parks open as Turkey seeks to make cities greener

Turkey inaugurated 10 “public gardens” or large city parks on World Environment Day (5 June). The parks serve as oases in the ever-growing concrete jungles known as cities.

New parks were opened in Istanbul, the northern cities of Sakarya, Samsun and Trabzon, the central city of Sivas, the northwestern city of Bursa and the eastern cities of Batman, Elazığ and Diyarbakır.

The “city parks” concept turns old public spaces into greenery, a move that will further advance Turkey’s environmental agenda amid steady growth in urban landscaping.

Currently, 207 parks are under construction across the country as Turkey pursues an ambitious plan of building 81 million square meters of such parks in 81 provinces.

Magnitude 5 earthquake shakes eastern Turkey’s Malatya

A magnitude 5 earthquake jolted eastern Turkey on Friday, according to the nation’s disaster agency.

The earthquake occurred at the depth of 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) in the Pütürge district of Malatya province, said the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) on its website.

The quake, which was felt in neighboring provinces, occurred at 9.06 p.m. local time (1806GMT), it added.

Malatya governor Aydın Baruş told Anadolu Agency (AA) that there had been no reports of casualties so far, though the situation is still being monitored

Aegean bay welcomes parent-to-be sand sharks

Sand sharks have flocked to their breeding ground at Boncuk Bay in the Aegean district of Marmaris, have flocked to the bay to breed, repeating a yearly routine.

The bay was declared a protection zone by the Directorate General for Preservation of Natural Heritage after it was found that it is the sole established nursery ground of the sand-bar sharks in the Mediterranean.

The sandbar shark is one of the biggest coastal sharks in the world and has a similar appearance to other dangerous sharks such as bull sharks, however, it is considered not to be dangerous to people.

The size of the sand shark can be up to two and a half meters and it preys on fish, rays, and crabs, according to the report.

Mehmet Ali Kahraman, the general manager of Conservation of Natural Assets, underlines the importance they attach to the protection of sharks.

Not only sharks, but also Mediterranean seals, stingrays and other rare species are under the control of the ministry, according to Kahraman.

Fate of Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling to be announced on 3 July

In a statement on Friday, Turkey Wrestling Federation (TGF) President Musa Aydin, announced a decision as to the fate of the 2020 Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling will be made on 3 July.

Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling is a unique and renowned tournament that takes place in northwestern Turkey’s Edirne, priding itself for having been held without interruptions for the last six and a half centuries despite wars, epidemics and even the dissolution of an empire. But now, the fate of the 2020 tournament is in the balance due to the coronavirus pandemic, although athletes and local administrators are hopeful that the event might go ahead in the autumn at the latest.

Edirne Mayor Recep Gürkan said in a statement,

“2020 has been a very difficult year for the whole world. The main thing is the health of our people.  We have survived with the extraordinary measures taken in our country and it hasn’t been long since we started the new normalization process.  We will hold a meeting in Edirne on July 3 in line with the directives of the Ministry of Health and Science Board and, if the pandemic decreases, we would like to determine the new date of Kırkpınar Wrestling.”

Sports Time on FRT Television

In a live broadcast during Sports Time on FRT Television, Fethiyespor Coach Mesut Toros talked about Fethiyespor’s preparations for the return of the leagues matches saying, “We are waiting for the announcements about the leagues restarting as things start to return to normal. The team is very keen and we have a 6-week plan for if the leagues start on July 12. Currently, 12 of our players continue their training in Fethiye. We are planning a camp to assess the general fitness of the players. If the leagues start, we will play our first match away against Kozanspor”.

Anıl Gir, a player from Fethiyespor who was injured in the Ağrı 1970 Sports match, was also a guest on Sports Time. Gır talked about his injury, surgery and rehabilitation saying, “I am hoping to play in the six league matches we have left. Although we were a new team at the beginning of the season, we had a good rhythm and picked up 32 points in 16 matches. I made the right decision by coming to Fethiyespor and management and fans were pleased with the football played.”
