Improvement works on roads to ancient city of TLOS

Improvement works on the road leading to the ancient city of Tlos continue in the district Seydikemer.
“The 4.7 km stretch of road from Güneşli – Yakaköy – Tlos which was narrow and difficult to navigate, is being improved and resurfaced. Work is expected to be completed early this week.

Work completed at İnlice beach
Improvement work is now completed at İnlice Beach, a public beach located between Göcek and Fethiye, 6 km from Göcek and 25 km from Fethiye.
The improvement work on the 800 meter sandy beach also includes pandemic safety measures.

Magnitude 5.5 earthquake shakes western Turkey’s Manisa

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 hit a town in western Turkey on Friday, sending people rushing out of buildings. There were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage.
The earthquake was centered in the district of Saruhanlı, in Manisa province, at a depth of 9.2 kilometers (5.6 miles), the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said.
Tremors of the quake were also felt in some other provinces, including Izmir, Bursa, Balıkesir, Aydın, Istanbul, and Kütahya.
The quake came a day after another temblor, measuring 5.4, shook the eastern province of Van, near the border with Iran, slightly injuring five people and damaging homes.
Turkey is crossed by two major fault lines and earthquakes are frequent. In 1999, a magnitude-7.4 quake killed more than 17,000 people in northwestern Turkey.

Caretta caretta nests detected on Patara beach

At least 116 nests have been detected on Patara Beach in the Kaş district of the southern province of Antalya, as the team tasked with protecting them started work on June 1.
The world-famous Patara beach is one of the 22 most important caretta caretta turtle breeding areas in Turkey. This year, a team of three experts continue to observe caretta carettas on the ancient beach.
This year, volunteers from the non-governmental organizations cannot be included in the observation team due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Caretta caretta hatchings are observed on the 12-kilometer section of Patara Beach, of which seven kilometers is part of a Special Environmental Protection Area.
According to Professor Eyüp Başkale, the number of nests was 75 on the same date last year, adding that the number of nests is 116 this year.
Each nest detected is protected with sub-surface cages, and the nests in areas where there are people on the beach are protected with both sub-surface and above-surface wire cages.
Warning signs are also placed to protect the nests. In the information office on the beach, information and awareness studies in Turkish and English are continuing for the visitors.

Quince, the ‘yellow diamond’ of Geyve, gets geographical indication tag

After a three-year wait, the quinces of Geyve, aka the “yellow diamonds” of northwestern Turkey, have earned their geographical indication (GI) mark, a type of intellectual property right which identifies a good as belonging to a specific territory.
From quince-flavored syrups and juice concentrates to vinegar, jams, molasses and Turkish delight, the fruit is used in many different ways. Grown in Turkey’s Sakarya province, quinces are exported to many European countries, including the Netherlands and Germany, as well as other destinations across the world such as Qatar, Malaysia, Japan and Russia.
Murat Kaya, the mayor of Geyve district in Sakarya province, said they will now apply to be on the European Union’s geographical indication list so that the fruit can reach their markets more easily.
Turkish delicacies such as Antep baklava, Aydın figs and Malatya apricots are also registered and GI-certified in the EU.

‘Habitat loss threatens Turkey’s unique salamander’

Turkey’s rare and endangered Anatolia Lycian salamander is under threat from serious habitat loss caused by various factors, including the opening of new stone and marble quarries, according to Mert Karis, an expert on herpetology, the branch of zoology concerned with reptiles and amphibians.
Thanks to climatic and geographical conditions, the fauna of Turkey is abundant and extremely varied and includes many rare and endemic species.
But in Turkey, as in other parts of the world, such species struggle to survive under various threats such as climate change, habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict.

Fethiyespor started preparations on Saturday after the Turkey Football Federation announced TFF 2 League and TFF 3 League matches will restart from July 18, 2020.
Fethiyespor, who compete in the 3. League 2. Group, will play their first match after the postponement of the league against Kozanspor.
The players who returned to their homes at the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak, will return on Monday.
The team players and management in Fethiye all tested negative for Covid-19 this week. Returning players will also undergo a test before rejoining the team.
The program of remaining matches in the TFF 2. League and TFF 3. League will be announced as soon as possible.
A meeting of present and past
Current Chairman of the Board of Directors Esat Bakırcı, Second President İsmail Öztürk, ex-chairman Nurettin Ünal and Oktay Uygur held a unity meeting last week to discuss ideas for a stronger Fethiyespor.
