Turkey wastes one fifth of its food production

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 18 October 2020

Turkey wastes 19 million tons of food, which is one-fifth of the country’s food production, annually, the forestry and agriculture minister said on World Food Day on Friday.

“If we can prevent the food waste by only 2% in our country, we can meet the one-year living expenses of approximately 360,000 families,” Bekir Pakdemirli said in an online meeting related to the World Food Day, organized by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Saying that the pandemic period made critical to accessing food, he noted that Turkey took innovative steps in the agriculture field in this period, such as digital agriculture platform, smart agriculture implementations, the GenBank and ancestry seeds projects.

Turkey feeds 4.5 million refugees and 40 million tourists annually besides its own population, and it is an important responsibility, he recalled.

Viorel Gutu, the FAO’s representative in Turkey and sub-regional coordinator for Central Asia, said the hunger has been increasing since 2014 globally, while obesity rates have been increasing at the same time.

All around the world, around 2 billion people cannot access safe, nutritious and enough food, Gutu noted and added that it is necessary to change the production and consumption methods of food.

In Istanbul, a Turkish celebrity chef with millions of social media followers marked World Food Day with the help of two Syrian refugees, by cooking on live TV a meal that is traditional to both nations.

“Today means a lot to me,” said Burak Ozdemir – also know as CZNBurak – on World Food Day, celebrating the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) foundation in 1945, and now a global event raising awareness of worldwide food shortages.

“Today we’ll cook together with two great women for a worthy project,” Ozdemir told Anadolu Agency.

Ozdemir, the owner of several restaurants in Istanbul, spoke before the cooking showcase at a Turkish Red Crescent soup kitchen that serves 1,000 people daily in the city’s working-class Pendik district.

Organized by the Turkish Red Crescent and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), the event was livestreamed in Turkish, English, and Arabic on social media.

Syrian refugees Amal Awat, 29, and Rayan Atr, 18, who both now live in Istanbul, joined Ozdemir, originally from Turkey’s southeastern province of Hatay on the Syrian border, to prepare the traditional testi kebab, a dish known in both Turkey and Syria which is made in an earthenware jug.

Around 50 million people watched the Turkish chef and Syrian duo make magic in the kitchen.

Turkey’s mass tree planting campaign goes international with 35 countries

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 18 October 2020

The “Breath For the Future” campaign launched last year by the government will return on November 11. Agriculture and Forestry Minister Bekir Pakdemirli said this year’s saplings will also be planted in 35 other countries along with Turkey.

The campaign aims to boost the number of forests in the country, which fights desertification and has faced a surge of forest fires in summer months.

Speaking at an event organized by Turkuvaz Media Group on the future of agriculture and forestry in the western province of Izmir on Thursday, Pakdemirli said the campaign was one of the most successful in Turkey for mass planting efforts. During the campaign, Turkey set a new world record for planting the most saplings in an hour, with 303,150 saplings planted. Overall, more than 13 million saplings were planted in the campaign held simultaneously across the country. The effort saw top officials, including President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, joining the work. Nov. 11 was declared National Forestation Day.

The ministry will supply one sapling for free for each household for the day this year. Bekir Karacabey, head of the General Directorate of Forestry, told Anadolu Agency (AA) on Friday that expanding the forests was vital for future generations, and Turkey was setting an example for other countries with its planting efforts. He said they aimed to increase the rate of forests in Turkey’s total area from 29% to at least 30% within the next three years.

Mass planting will help Turkey regrow the forests it lost to fires. The official figures from August show that between January and that month, 1,800 forest fires damaged an area of 4,298 hectares (42.98 square kilometers) across the country. Causes of fires vary, but they mostly stem from the negligence of the public, leaving flammable material behind in the forests; while the PKK terrorist group was behind some fires found out have been a result of arson. Turkey stepped up preventive measures against the fires, tapping into technology and increased manpower. Since last year, it also uses drones to monitor the forests.
