Çalış Beach gets a 7 million TL facelift

Work has started on the improvement works in Çalış promised by Fethiye Mayor, Alim Karca, earlier in the summer.

The work, costing 7 million TL, is the first to be carried out in Çalış for 28 years and includes improving infrastructure systems, renewing the kordon flooring with special cobblestones, new seating areas and landscaping, updated lighting systems that will be placed in such a way as to not disturb nesting loggerhead turtles (caretta caretta), and walkways for those with disabilities.

Have a look at this video from Mick Scarsbrook (Mick Amca), who was out filming the progress on Thursday.

A number of palm trees have been safely relocated to grassy areas in the Foca district.

We will bring you further updates as the work progresses.

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 22 November 2020

Faralya resident and self professed “Clean Up Warrior”, Virgina Holmes has been tirelessly fighting the battle against litter in Faralya and along the coastline, going out litter collecting alone or with neighbours at least twice a week. Earlier this month, Virginia decided the time was right to refresh an initiative across the Fethiye area.

A meeting was held in Ovacik on 11th November 2020 attended by locals, both Turkish and other nationalities, and local business owners. The Faralya Muhtar Hasan Karaburun also attended. He has personally been joining the clean-ups in the area.

The vision is to seek a cultural and educational change to improve the long-term situation as well as addressing the immediate problem in the short-term.

Approximately 20 people took part in the first activity, a clean up around Ölüdeniz beach on Wednesday.

You can join one of the initiatives, which will be published on the “Keep Fethiye Clean” page on Facebook

Reconstruction set to begin in western Turkey’s earthquake-hit Izmir

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 22 November 2020

Izmir, Turkey’s third-largest city, which sits on the Aegean coast, was rocked by a 6.6 magnitude earthquake on Oct. 30. Less than a month after the disaster, which killed 116 people, the government will launch a “transformation” project in seven affected areas, Minister of Environment and Urban Planning Murat Kurum announced Friday. Addressing a meeting of Parliament where his ministry’s budget was discussed, Kurum said damage assessment work was concluded in 145,677 buildings in Izmir, and they discovered thousands of buildings and housing units heavily damaged or demolished in the earthquake. Kurum said that “6,465 buildings sustained slight damage and another 676 had medium damage. So far, personal possessions of residents were evacuated from 136 buildings and 73 buildings were demolished.”

Turkey has been pursuing an “urban transformation” project nationwide as a preventive measure against disasters and to renew urban landscapes. The project involves the demolition of old, unsafe buildings and their replacement with new, sturdier ones. Kurum said in Parliament that 70% of the buildings that collapsed in Izmir were those built before 1990 and the rest were built between 1990 and 2000, one year after a deadly earthquake in northwestern Turkey killed 17,800 people. “We haven’t seen any damage to buildings constructed after 2000. This shows how right the measures against earthquakes that were taken after the 1999 earthquake were, including the inspection of construction work,” Kurum stated.

Historic Istanbul mosque to be restored following fire

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 22 November 2020

Istanbul’s 17th-century Vaniköy Mosque, which was damaged by fire last week is to be restored, Istanbul Gov. Ali Yerlikaya said Wednesday.

The fire broke out Sunday afternoon (15 Nov) at the historic mosque in Istanbul’s Üskudar district.

The fire that gutted the mosque along the Bosporus was caused by a short circuit in electrical cables and then spread through the building, with the mosque’s wooden construction accelerating the flames, the Istanbul Fire Department said on Tuesday.

While dozens of firemen and several vehicles were dispatched immediately to the scene, Istanbul’s iconic mosque was still left with substantial damage.

Hearing about the fire, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said he was upset by the unfortunate incident and vowed to return the mosque to its former glory.

“We will hopefully restore the mosque in accordance with its historical structure and origin, leaving a legacy for future generations,” the president said.

The single-minaret mosque was built by Vani Mehmet Efendi in 1670, during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed IV.
