Mete told us that the work is planned to be completed by mid-April 2021. At the moment, the old parquet tiles have been removed and infrastructure work will be carried out on water and electric services first.

Once the infrastructure work is completed, the flooring will be replaced, landscaping carried out, new lighting installed that will not disturb the Caretta Caretta who nest on Çalış beach. Seating areas along the beach wall will be renewed and extra seating added. The addition of extra viewing platforms is currently being discussed.

The palm trees that are a familiar site along the Kordon in Çalış, have been relocated to another site whilst the work is carried out however, the plan is to bring them back once the work is completed.

The work, costing 7 million TL, is the first to be carried out in Çalış for 28 years.

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 29 November 2020

Survivors of a devastating earthquake that killed 116 people in the western province of Izmir last month are adapting to a new life in a “container city,” a cluster of prefabricated units for those who lost their homes. Families whose houses were destroyed or heavily damaged by the earthquake started settling in the prefabricated units this week after moving from tents. This will be their last temporary home before the construction of new residences in the area for the survivors.

The 6.6 magnitude earthquake razed more than a dozen buildings to the ground and damaged scores of others. The government agencies and charities had set up tents in the aftermath of the earthquake, and they recently finished the installation of prefabricated units before the onset of winter. The container city has been set up in Bayraklı, one of the districts hit hardest by the earthquake. After the trauma of the disaster, people have resumed their lives with children playing games along the long alleys between rows of housing units.

Forty-four families have been settled in 493 temporary houses set up in an area of 46,000 square meters so far. One alley in this new city is named after Ayda Gezgin and another after Elif Perincek, two young survivors of the earthquake who were pulled from the rubble 91 and 65 hours, respectively, after the quake. Each prefabricated unit contains a kitchen, a living room, a bedroom and a bathroom. Playgrounds will also be installed in the container city soon.

The government will soon start construction of new, sturdy residences for people who lost homes in the earthquake and those who had to evacuate damaged buildings. Initially, 5,000 residences will be built and their construction is expected to be completed within a year.

Company debuts exclusive-seat bus amid pandemic in Turkey

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 29 November 2020

Traveling long-distance is not a challenge for passengers perusing inter-city buses during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, bus companies are embattled with economic woes as they can only sell tickets for half of the seats due to social distancing rules. A company manufacturing bodyworks in Bursa, Turkey’s car production hub, came up with a novel solution: a single, exclusive seat for each passenger but with more seats than those in regular buses.

The first bus was unveiled at the city’s bus station on Tuesday. Sedat Türk, a company official, told Ihlas News Agency (IHA) at the unveiling ceremony that the bus with new seating order will help companies that cannot sell tickets to two adjacent seats at the same time except to families. Arafat Kaya, one of the developers of the bus, said the idea was first conceived eight months ago. “I was hearing complaints from travel companies, and together with colleagues, we decided to make something for safe travel. Now, companies can sell tickets for all seats. All seats are independent of each other. A normal bus, under pandemic restrictions, can only allow 27 passengers, but our bus can carry 38 passengers,” Kaya said. He said international companies are already showing interest in the project. “There are similar projects in the world, but this is first for Turkey,” he said.

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 29 November 2020

Turkey’s state-run development agency donated fishing kits to the fishing community in South Sudan on Friday.

The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) donated about 250 fishing kits to over 150 fishermen in the South Sudanese capital Juba to help them lift up their standard of living amid the pandemic.

The donation included 1,750 rolls of fishing twines, 700 boxes of fishing hooks and 350 rolls of fishing monofilament.

Turkey’s Ambassador Tugrul Biltekin urged the fishermen to protect themselves and their families from COVID-19 and also offered them a big carton of face masks.

Jackson Muso, the director general of the Livestock and Fisheries Ministry, was present at the ceremony and said that the government of South Sudan is very grateful to Turkey for supporting vulnerable people in the country.

“The donation of these fishing kits is in line with the ministry’s plans of 2030 to transform the fishing sector in the country,” Muso said.
