Fethiye Municipality meet with residents to discuss sewage system replacement work safety concerns
A meeting was held at the Ölüdeniz Municipality Office on Friday between Fethiye Municipality officials, local residents, citizens and tradesmen to address residents’ concerns over the state of the roads during the current phase of the work being carried out to renew the sewage system in Ovacık – Hisarönü.
Muğla Metropolitan Municipality and Fethiye Municipality are investing 62 million TL into the sewage line replacement in the area. 45% of the sewage system has been replaced and road construction works in the completed areas has been started. The condition of the roads still to be resurfaced has been made worse by heavy rainfall in recent weeks, raising serious concerns among local residents.
Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca visited Ovacık with a team of engineers on Wednesday to inspect the roads and discuss progress of the ongoing project in readiness for the meeting.
The number of attendees at the meeting was limited to a representation of 15 due to coronavirus measures. The attendees had an opportunity to share their concerns with Fethiye Deputy Mayor Oğuz Bolelli, Fethiye Council Member Mehmet Uysal, Ölüdeniz Mukhtar Halil Duman, Fethiye Municipality Civil Works Manager Tahir Başaran and the director of the engineering company Sezgin San. The main concern was to make sure safety aspects of the work are improved.
Fethiye Municipality has responded to residents’ complaints by making a commitment to fill in the holes immediately and carry out works to make sure the roads are safer. More metal bridges will be erected over the pipelines to improve access and any additional measures required will be taken by the engineering company.
The work will be ongoing until May 2021 and extra measures will be taken for the residents of the areas. Safety measures will be increased and locals will be informed of the work schedule in advance via press and social media. Fethiye Municipality will be in frequent contact with the contractor enabling a follow up between Municipality representatives Yavuz Topateş and Mehmet Uysal and local residents.
At the end of the meeting, British residents and Turkish locals thanked the representatives and expressed their appreciation for the improvement works on the infrastructure.

Cleaning activities continue in Fethiye
Approximately five tons of garbage was collected during a cleaning activity that took place in the Oyuktepe peninsula and bay area of Fethiye on Friday.
The clean was carried out by Fethiye Municipality Cleaning Services Directorate, AKUT Fethiye, and the Neighborhood Disaster Volunteers Emergency Response Association (MAG-AME) and was attended by Fethiye Deputy Mayor Oğuz Bolelli and Fethiye Municipality Cleaning Affairs Manager Mahmut Bayraktar.
Five tons of garbage was collected by 35 volunteers in a three-hour period. Plastic and glass bottles, food containers and paper packages made up most of the garbage collected.
Fethiye Municipality Deputy Mayor Oğuz Bolelli said that the environmental clean was carried out in order to raise awareness and said that, although it is an area quite far from the city center, approximately five tons of garbage was still collected.
He went on to say that it is not easy to clean Fethiye, which has a population of approximately 150 thousand, with only 250 personnel working at the Cleaning Affairs Directorate and called on citizens to be aware of this and to dispose of litter responsibly.

Covid-19 patients killed by exploding oxygen cylinder in Turkey
11 people have died after an oxygen cylinder exploded at an intensive care unit treating Covid-19 patients in Turkey, the health minister said.
The state-run Anadolu news agency said the fire took place at the private Sanko University hospital in Gaziantep, which is about 40 miles north of the country’s border with Syria. It cited a hospital statement identifying the victims as being between 56 and 85. The fire was quickly brought under control.
All the victims were patients who had been hospitalised with coronavirus. The statement said 14 intensive-care patients had been transferred to other hospitals. An investigation is under way.
“We are profoundly saddened by this tragedy,” the Turkish health minister, Fahrettin Koca, said before a planned visit to the hospital.
The governor’s office said 19 patients had been in the unit when a high-pressure oxygen device exploded at 4.45am (1.45GMT). Other than the fatalities, no others were injured in the fire, it said.

Rooster that fell over from crowing too long goes viral in Turkey
Bahtiyar, the rooster, achieved social media fame for an unusual aspect of his daily routine. The rooster went viral after it uninterruptedly crowed for about a minute and a half before collapsing, falling backward out of breath.
The animal, hailing from the western province of Denizli – the country’s rooster hub – belongs to Okan Gökbudak, a textile worker who raises roosters as a hobby.
Denizli roosters can be distinguished from other roosters by the sound of their crowing, and according to Mustafa Ünal, collapsing while crowing is fairly common. Ünal, who heads a department of the local Directorate of Agriculture in charge of raising local rooster breeds, says other species can only crow for up to five seconds, but the Denizli rooster can crow longer, sometimes for over 20 seconds. “The longer it lasts, the more difficult it is for those animals to control their breath, and they eventually lose their balance.” he told Demirören News Agency (DHA) on Thursday.
Mystery structure found during archaeological dig in Istanbul’s Haydarpaşa
Archaeologists have uncovered the ruins of a marble structure during an excavation in Istanbul’s Kadıköy district on the Asian side. While the site’s architecture does not lend any clues to its function, archaeologists believe it was considered a sacred place. Mass graves were also found during the excavations.
This is the latest discovery to emerge from excavations that began in May 2018 at Haydarpaşa, a historic train station. The station was shut down for restorations, in which ancient artifacts were unearthed and since then Haydarpaşa has been an excavation site.
The structure, discovered at the station’s waiting platforms, covers a large area and is apsidal in form, a feature common in ancient churches. Kadıköy, a populous neighborhood on the Asian side of Istanbul, has been inhabited for centuries by different civilizations.
Many well-preserved artifacts have been found in the area, formerly known as Haydarpaşa Meadows before railway construction began in 1872 since the construction boom came to the neighborhood later than in other parts of Istanbul. The surrounding area, owned by Turkish State Railways, hosts tracks leading to the station, maintenance wards and depots allowing artifacts to remain unharmed.
