An investment of 2 million TL will be made for improvements to the fish market in Fethiye. Updates will be made to the historic roof, facade, flooring and waste water disposal systems. The old system is not efficient enough to minimise the smell caused by the disposal of fishy waste water. The project will be carried out later in the year.
Last month was the sixth warmest December in the last 50 years in Turkey, Turkish scientists said on Thursday.
Data compiled by Anadolu Agency from the Turkish State Meteorological Service showed the historical average temperature for the month was 4.6 °C (40 °F).
That increased 2.6°C (5°F) to 7.2°C (45°F) in December 2020 across the country, except for the eastern province of Bitlis and the southeastern province of Batman.
The warmest December recorded since 1971 was in 2010.
Senior scientist at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Hüseyin Toros told Anadolu Agency that in general, 2020 was a hot and dry year not only for Turkey but for Europe and the world.
“The warm December 2020 in Turkey is related to high-pressure areas and hot air movements from the south,” he said.

Late winter weather brings snow to Babadağ

The warm December weather has given way to colder wintry weather this week, bringing snow to Babadağ in the Ölüdeniz District of Fethiye creating picture postcard scenes at the summit.

Furkan Arslan, one of the employees of cable car company Kırtur said, “The snow is late this year compared to seasonal normals. Babadağ is very beautiful in both summer and winter. We advise citizens to be very careful when going to the summit in their own vehicles, we provide vehicles to transport our employees.”
After the Kırtur cable car center, which is under construction in Babadağ, is opened, it is expected that transportation will be much easier and contribute to winter tourism.
Turkish resort city Antalya hosts over 3.5M tourists from 175 different countries

Turkey’s Mediterranean resort city of Antalya, which is among the world’s foremost tourism destinations, hosted over 3.5 million tourists despite the pandemic, tourism sector authorities said on Friday.
In Antalya, as in the rest of the country, the tourism season last year was launched in June in accordance with a plan of measures by the health, interior, and foreign ministries under the guidance of the Culture and Tourism Ministry, as well as with contributions of tourism partners.
Antalya started to welcome foreign tourists as flights to/from Ukraine resumed on July 1 last year, and continued receiving more tourists when flights to/from Russia began on Aug. 10, 2020.
Through all measures, over 3.5 million tourists across the world visited Antalya.
The city hosted more than 1.5 million Russian, over 557,000 Ukrainian, at least 346,000 German, and around 211,000 British tourists. They were followed by arrivals from Poland, Switzerland, Moldova, Romania, Kazakhstan, and the Netherlands.

310 unauthorised buildings in Cappadocia pulled down in two years

Some 310 unauthorised buildings were demolished in the last two years in the historical site of Cappadocia, which is famous for cave dwellings and remarkable rock formations.
During a press conference on January 11, the governor of the Central Anatolian province of Nevşehir Sezer Becel said
“ 239 structures were demolished in 2019 . In 2020, the decision to demolish a further 305 buildings was taken. To date, 71 of them have been pulled down and 234 more buildings will be demolished,”
All the buildings were constructed in the protected areas of the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia.
He also gave information about the fight against the COVID-19 outbreak in the province.
“Due to restrictions and curfews, the fight against the virus has shown good results,” Becel said, adding that the number of the cases have reduced by 71 percent in the province with the occupancy rate in intensive care units standing at around 59 percent The risk will go down as administration of vaccine begins.”
Becel also noted that more than 6,000 people were fined in the province for violating the COVID-19 measures, and procedural acts were implemented for 80 Nevşehir residents for violating isolation rules.

Turkey investigates Facebook’s move to collect WhatsApp data

The Turkish Competition Board said on Monday it had launched an investigation into WhatsApp and its owner Facebook Inc days after the messaging app asked users to agree to let Facebook collect user data such as phone numbers and locations.
The change at WhatsApp was rolled out globally, but appears to have come under particular scrutiny in Turkey, where President Tayyip Erdoğan’s media office and the defence ministry told journalists they were migrating their WhatsApp chat groups to rival app BiP, a unit of Turkcell.
In a written statement, Turkey’s Competition Board said it had ruled the data-collection requirement should be suspended until the probe is complete.
“The Competition Board has opened an investigation into Facebook and WhatsApp and suspended the requirement to share Whatsapp data,” it said.
WhatsApp updated its terms of service last Wednesday, allowing Facebook and its subsidiaries to collect user data. The deadline for agreeing to the new terms is February 8.
