18 injured as ferocious storms batter Turkey’s beleaguered Izmir

The western Turkish province of Izmir was subjected to the full fury of mother nature on Thursday night, as a tornado flung cars into the air, uprooted trees and toppled a crane, injuring at least 18 people.

A ferocious hailstorm started pummeling the province at approximately 9 p.m. local time before a tornado touched down and capsized boats in the harbor and flung vehicles high into the air.

More than 16 people were hospitalised initially, including nine struck by a falling crane in the Alaçatı area, though this figure was later updated by local authorities.

Izmir Mayor Tunç Soyer said the situation may have been far worse were it not for the nighttime curfew imposed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Several cars in the area were flung over the rooftop of houses and were found far as eight to 10 meters (33 feet) away from their parking spots; it’s clear there is significant damage,” said Izmir Gov. Yavuz Selim Köşger.

Elsewhere in Izmir, Turkey’s third-largest city, a road collapsed while roofs were ripped from dozens of houses.

Less than two weeks ago, one person was killed when flash floods struck Izmir, with authorities already sounding the alarm about the potential financial cost of what they described as natural devastation induced by climate change. The region also experienced a deadly 7.0 earthquake at the end of 2020.

Turkey’s Counter Narcotics Training Academy (NEA) shared a heartwarming video of one of its K9 dogs delivering dog food to a stray just outside of the academy’s gates on Wednesday.

In the video shared on Twitter, the K9 dog named Magnum can’t contain his excitement as he is led to the gates of the Dog Training Center of NEA. The trainer puts down a small basket filled with dog food, and Magnum, being the good dog that he is, grabs it and waits patiently as the gates open.

Once he receives the OK, he darts out, wagging his tail in excitement, to share the food with a street dog dubbed Garip.

NEA shared the video with the message, “Sharing makes life beautiful.”

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 14 February 2021

While sudden changes in weather conditions due to global warming are a subject of discussion worldwide, Turkish officials have announced new high-temperature records, with some parts of Turkey experiencing the hottest months ever recorded during the ongoing winter season.

Turkish State Meteorological Service observed an extreme rise in temperatures in 72 places in the country last month. Top of the list was the northern province of Kastamonu’s Cide district, the Central Anatolian province of Sivas as well as the Central Anatolian province of Kahramanmaraş’s Göksun district.

According to the data by the Turkish State Meteorological Service, the average temperature over the previous years during January has been 2.7 degrees Celsius.

However, this January, due to warmer weather, the average temperature has increased by 2.7 degrees Celcius, reaching 5.4 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, experts issued a nationwide snowfall warning starting from February 12, with average temperatures expected to drop as low as 15 degrees Celsius.

The forecast and feared cold front coupled with heavy snowfall arrived in Istanbul late on Saturday after moving in from the country’s northwestern Thrace region on the way.

By midnight, much of the city was covered in white as the Asian districts of the megapolis were last to receive heavy snowfall.

The Turkish State Meteorological Service (TSMS) and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s (IBB) Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) had previously warned Istanbulites that the snowfall could last for five days with a severe drop in temperatures.
