Call for solution to increasing traffic and parking problem in Fethiye

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 21 February 2021

Citizens, tradesmen and drivers are calling for the authorities to find a solution to the increasing traffic and parking problem in Fethiye.

A combination of an increase in the population and in the number of private vehicles and the ongoing infrastructure works at the Kordon, Tuzla District, Babataşı District and Öldeniz Caddesi are creating congestion and making it more difficult to find a parking space.

Local business owners highlighted to Gerçek Fethiye that streets are filled with the vehicles of workers who leave their cars all day, making it hard for customers to find a parking place.

They went on to suggest that, as a short-term solution, the school playgrounds could be used for car-parking whilst a more permanent solution is found.

Greenhouse producers watch over crops as temperatures drop

Whilst crops usually thrive in temperature-controlled greenhouses, the recent cold weather has led to greenhouse producers in Muğla having to keep watch to prevent the crops from being affected by agricultural frost.

Daytime temperatures have been around 4 degrees however, producers and their families work to keep stoves burning during the overnight temperatures of minus 5-degree so the products are not affected by the cold.

Friends rally round to support the producers. Gürhan Barkın, an industrial engineer in Muğla said, “We support our friend by providing him with the help we can after work. We saw how important production and agriculture were during the pandemic period. After leaving work, instead of going home, we come to our friend’s greenhouse and give the support we can.”

Work restarts on demolishing illegal buildings in Fethiye

Work started on the demolition of illegal buildings not covered by amnesty in the Fethiye area on Friday. Two buildings in Faralya and one in Yanıklar were demolished after they were discovered to be illegal by the Muğla Environment and Urban Planning Directorate.

Teams from Fethiye Municipality Zoning and Urbanization Directorate arrived early in the morning with construction equipment to demolish the buildings.

584 illegal buildings located in Kayaköy, Faralya and Kirme districts of Fethiye were found to be illegal when inspections were first tightened last year however, demolition work was postponed due to COVID-19. Work now continues on demolishing the illegal buildings.

The Ministry of Environment and Urbanization examines buildings, one by one over satellite images, and building registration certificates obtained illegally are cancelled and a demolition order issued.

A dam good snowfall: Istanbul’s water level up again

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 21 February 2021

At a time of feared drought, this week brought good news for Turkey’s most crowded metropolis, Istanbul. Water levels in the dams supplying the city are now almost half full, after weeks of scary sights of parched land emerging in dried-up parts of the dams.

The data by the Istanbul Water and Sewage Administration (ISKI) of the municipality shows a dramatic rise in levels, from only 19.1% on January 8 to an average of 49.1%. This is only the beginning as it is expected that the levels will go higher when the snow, still visible in some parts of the city, starts melting and mixes with underground waters.

The city has been gripped by sporadic and dense snowfall since late Saturday. Though it was predicted to end early Thursday, it continued even until Friday for some districts on the European side.

Lake Salda to support NASA’s Mars research

Lake Salda, a crystal-clear lake in southeastern Turkey, could shed light on “exciting” scientific research involving Mars, a senior official said on Thursday.

Similarities between the lake, found in Burdur province, Turkey, and the Jezero Crater on Mars has captured the interest of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in its research on possible life on the red planet.

“Like NASA, we are looking forward to the results of the study at Jezero Crater,” Environment and Urbanization Minister Murat Kurum said on Twitter.

NASA announced on Thursday that its Perseverance Mars Rover had touched down safely at the 28-mile wide depression thought to have been home to a large lake — and perhaps microbial life — according to the space agency.

Turkey’s lira leads emerging markets this year after dour 2020

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 21 February 2021

Turkey’s lira has kicked off 2021 as the world’s leading emerging market currency, drawing a stark contrast to its dour performance last year. The currency has rallied around 6.5 per cent against the dollar since the end of 2020, far exceeding the 1.8 per cent gain for Ukraine’s hryvnia, the second-best performing major EM currency this year.

The rebound, which has brought the exchange rate against the dollar just below the closely watched TL7 level, highlights the sharp shift in investor sentiment that came after Turkey shook up its economic management in November. The currency plunged by a fifth last year, trading weaker than 8.5 lira to the dollar for the first time.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s decisions to let his son-in-law Berat Albayrak quit as finance minister, and to install a central bank chief with the leeway to deploy more orthodox monetary policies than his predecessor, have been credited with the brightening outlook.
