In the week while we saw a budget that taxed sugary drinks in the uk and magician Paul Daniels died, life in FETHIYE continued.
Man Found Alive After 8 Days Missing
As we reported last week, a missing person from Hisaronu triggered a search and rescue hunt a week last Friday.
Personnel from AKUT, the Jandarma, fire service, tracker dog and neighbours took to the countryside to try and find the missing 71 year old Şafak Yılmaz who had been missing for two days.
By Saturday the local press reported that the search teams had investigated a cave in which they thought someone may have fallen into but found the site was clear.
But they kept in searching.
Last week after 8 days in the open the 71 year old was found unconscious but alive.
Rescuers took the man by stretcher over 2 km to a waiting ambulance.
The press reported that family and friends believe it is a miracle that the man survived for so long without food and shelter given the wet and windy weather that had swept over the area.
Sludge Budge

The state hydraulic works (DSI) began dredging the waterways that feed into the harbour last week.
The work also extended into the main channel that flows into the harbour by the fish and chip boats.
The works are expected to last around a week.
The local press reported that the work is being carried out before the tourism season starts.
Miner Died
Meanwhile a less fortunate 47 year old man died when the private mine he was working at near the village of Karacaören suffered an explosion.
The body of the man has been sent to Mugla for autopsy.
The press suggested that the explosion was caused by a blasting error.

Sam Tucker who lives in FETHIYE (remember him from the cycle trip to Cape Town a couple of years ago) summited Kilimanjaro last week.
The walk to the top of the 6,000 metre mountain was all in aid of local Dalyan animal shelter HAYDOS.
Well done Sam for climbing Africa’s highest mountain!
FETHIYE Tourism Ambassadors

The tourism industry was back in the news last week when the deputy mayor of FETHIYE spoke with the press about the recent promotion work carried out at the Berlin Tourism Festival.
He said that the event really helped to put The FETHIYE area on the map and said that the mayor of FETHIYE had been interviewed on national TV and had used that opportunity to promote FETHIYE as a great destination.
He also said that other work to promote the area would help to bolster the industry that has been hit by a downturn in bookings due to regional and domestic issues.
He said that the mayor had also encouraged expatriate Turks to choose FETHIYE, Turkey as their holiday destination this year.
It was also announced that a direct flight between Dalaman and Hungary would start this season following extensive work with an airline and tour operators.
Turkish Money
The British Pound bought 4.15 TL by the close of trading on Friday.
It started the week at 4.25 TL and dropped to a low of 4.07 TL at one point.
A Turkish Lira was worth 24 pence.

The acts of terrorism in Turkey have led to a sharp decline in tourism bookings and that has resulted in cancelled flights and operators pulling out of the country.
But tourism is still blooming in some areas.
Last week the cruise liner Thompson Spirit carrying over 1,200 mostly British passengers stopped off in Marmaris.
Some passengers chose to shop in the town, some took an excursion to Dalyan and the famous rock tombs whilst others just chilled out on the beach.
The press reported that a further four cruise ships would be visiting Marmaris this March.
