“We are drawing our red line”

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 04 April 2021

Fethiye Municipality teams started to paint the white-coloured lines on pedestrian crossings in red after the Ministry of Internal Affairs launched a project to raise awareness of pedestrian safety with the slogan “We are drawing our red line.”

The activity, which was launched throughout the country on March 30, is aimed at vehicles slowing down when approaching pedestrians and school crossings and to create awareness of giving way to pedestrians who are about to cross.

Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu announced “We are drawing our red line on March 30” on his social media account.

Fethiye District Governor Eyüp Fırat, District Police Chief İsmail Ayhan and District Gendarmerie Commander Ahmet Öztürk carried out the painting of the first red lines during the event, attended by Gazi Primary School students, on Fethiye Atatürk Street.

During the event, District Governor Fırat and his team put on specially made masks, t-shirts and hats and took photos with the students at the pedestrian crossing.

The students carried posters in their hands that read “Kuralsızlığa Kırmızı, Hayata Yeşil Işık Yak”, “Öncelik Hayatın, Öncelik Yayanın”, “Evdeyim ama Trafik Kuralları Aklımda” (“Red on Irregularity, Green Light on Life”, “Your Priority Is Your Life, Priority Is On The Foot”, “I’m Home But Traffic Rules Are On My Mind”).

Traffic Police from the Fethiye District Police Department distributed red whistles to the students with a hat, mask and t-shirt with the text “Yayalar Kırmızı Çizgimiz” (Pedestrians Our Red Line).

After the red line was drawn on the pedestrian crossing, the District Governor Eyüp Fırat and his team distributed various gifts to the students

In a similar event in Seydikemer, Mayor Yakup Otgöz also supported the project by painting one of the white lines in red.

Turkey to soon start work on huge waterway project Kanal Istanbul

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 04 April 2021

The construction of a huge canal on the edge of Istanbul is set to begin in the very near future, Turkey’s Transport and Infrastructure Minister Adil Karaismailoğlu announced Tuesday.

“It is now a very short time before the construction of the Kanal Istanbul begins,” the minister said.

As the country moves forward with the project, Environment and Urbanization Minister Murat Kurum on Saturday said development plans for the canal had been approved.

“We have approved the Kanal Istanbul Project development plans and put them out for public consultation.” Kurum wrote on Twitter.

The canal will connect the Black Sea north of Istanbul to the Marmara Sea to the south, designed as an alternative global shipping lane, and estimated to cost around TL 75 billion ($9.2 billion).

The 45-kilometre (27.96-mile) canal, which will be built in Istanbul’s Küçükçekmece-Sazlıdere-Durusu corridor, will boast a capacity of 160 vessels a day and is expected to create significant economic value by reducing transit periods and costs, in addition to passage fees.

However, critics point to the project’s possible environmental effects on the Marmara Sea and the 15-million megapolis itself through effects on water resources and a possible construction boom alongside the canal’s route.

‘Forgotten’ crashed plane to be converted into restaurant in Turkey

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 04 April 2021

Three years after it skidded off the runway and fell over a cliff, a passenger plane, abandoned to its fate, will finally have a new function: a pide restaurant.

The district municipality of Yomra, in Trabzon province, where the plane was towed to, announced that three businesspeople will invest TL 4 million (about $482,000) to repurpose the plane into a restaurant serving pide, the popular dish of the Black Sea region.

The plane was traveling from the capital Ankara to Trabzon on Jan. 13, 2018, when the pilots lost control during the landing. The plane was buried in mud, just 25 meters (82 feet) away from the sea, on the side of a cliff. None of the 162 passengers or six crew members were injured in the crash.

The plane was removed from the crash site and taxied to the airport where it remained for months before the insurance company put it on sale. Yomra Municipality acquired the plane to convert it into a “Millet Kıraathanesi,” a coffeehouse-library.

However, the plan never came to fruition and the plane was abandoned at a space used as a marketplace in the district.

Mustafa Bıyık, the new mayor of Yomra, told Ihlas News Agency (IHA) on Wednesday that the plane will be at its new location near the coast within three months.
