Ceremony held in Turkey to mark Gallipoli landings
A wreath-laying ceremony was held in western Canakkale province early on Sunday to commemorate the 106th anniversary of the landing of foreign troops on Turkish soil during World War I.
Due to coronavirus measures, the wreath-laying ceremony with limited participants was held instead of a dawn service with the usual participation of thousands of Australians and New Zealanders coming to commemorate their ancestors every April 25.
April 25 is also known as ANZAC Day in Australia — a significant national holiday that honors the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought and died in Canakkale on Turkey’s western coast in 1915. Australia and New Zealand commemorate the event as Gallipoli.
The ceremony was attended by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Gallipoli Peninsula Historical Site President Ismail Kasdemir, British Ambassador Dominick Chilcott, Irish Ambassador Mcguinness and French Consul General in Istanbul Olivier Gauvin.

20 million 733 thousand TL tender completed for BSK (Hot Asphalt)
The hot asphalt tender for Baha Şıkman Caddesi, Mustafa Kemal Boulevard, İnönü Boulevard, Ölüdeniz Caddesi and Atatürk Caddesi was completed on Wednesday. The work in Ölüdeniz Caddesi and Baha Şıkman Cadessi, which has included upgrades to the infrastructure by MUSKİ, is expected to be completed by June 15 and these streets will be open to traffic.

Göcek Turkey’s most expensive tunnel by tunnel length
A protest was held on Tuesday by CHP Deputy Chairman of Nature Rights and Environment Ali Öztunç, CHP deputies, Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca, CHP Fethiye District President Mehmet Demir, representatives of district organizations and citizens objecting to the exorbitant prices of the Göcek Tunnel.
The issue of the Göcek Tunnel was brought to the agenda of the Turkish Grand National Assembly by CHP Muğla Deputy Süleyman Girgin in March with a further commitment to continue to bring the issue to their attention at every opportunity as they hold the authority to make changes on behalf of the people.
The Göcek tunnel was opened in 2006 under a build-operate-transfer model at a cost of 13 million dollars. To pass through this 900-meter tunnel, you have to pay in both directions. Although the Göcek Tunnel is only 960 meters, a fee of 11 Turkish lira each way is charged for passing through this tunnel. In comparison, the 119 km long Izmir-Aydin Highway, which includes the Selahattin Tunnel, 3 times longer than the Göcek Tunnel, is only 7.5 lira. There is no logical justification for these two different pricing policies.
Despite the announcement that it would be free, the second tunnel has also been transferred to the company, deducting 7 years from the expiry date of the first contract in 2032. Tunnel charges will continue until 2025.

Anadolujet to launch flights from Birmingham to Antalya and Dalaman
Turkish Airlines subsidiary Anadolujet is to launch its first flights from Birmingham airport this summer.
The airline will launch daily flights to the leisure destinations of Antalya and Dalaman on July 19, using 189-seat B737-800 aircraft.
Flight TK7970 will depart Dalaman at 0910, arriving into Birmingham at 1140, with the return leg TK7971 leaving the UK at 1240, landing back into Dalaman at 1850.
Meanwhile flight TK7968 will depart Antalya at 0900, arriving into Birmingham at 1140, with the return leg TK7969 leaving the UK at 1240, landing back into Antalya at 1850.
Anadolujet also operates flights from both Antalya and Dalaman to London Stansted, while parent carrier Turkish Airlines already serves Istanbul from Birmingham.
Commenting on the news Omer Faruk, Turkish Airlines’ general manager, Birmingham, said:
“We are delighted to announce that we are starting non-stop flights to Antalya and Dalaman with Anadolujet, trademark of Turkish Airlines. Whether it’s couples looking for a romantic break, families setting sail on a summer holiday or friends looking for a week of fun in the sun, Antalya and Dalaman have something for everyone. We are looking forward to welcoming passengers onboard this summer.”

Turkish Red Crescent distributes food aid in Pakistan
Turkish Red Crescent President Kerem Kınık said on Friday that they aim to reach around 1 million people in 18 countries during the Muslims’ holy month of Ramadan.
Stating that aid is provided mainly to countries where war, disaster and poverty are experienced, Kınık said: “We are in countries such as Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, Iraq and Syria. On the other hand, our activities continue in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria and other Balkan countries as well.”
Kınık also added that they support people with hygiene and personal protective equipment, as well as providing food support.
The Turkish Red Crescent on Friday distributed food packages among 500 families in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad.
The ongoing COVID-19 crisis in the country has deprived a large number of daily wage workers of their source of income.
The head of Pakistan Red Crescent Society, thanked the Turkish government, Ambassador Yurdakul and Turkish organizations for supporting the people of his country in a difficult time.

Turkish lira woes continue
Turkey’s lira was headed for its worst day this month on Thursday as concerns over financial stability grew, while other emerging market currencies were encouraged by a weaker dollar, although surging Covid-19 cases capped gains.
The lira dropped as much as 2.3% to 8.3669 to the dollar, leading losses across emerging market currencies in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). It had tumbled nearly 1% on Wednesday after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan defended a costly foreign exchange sales policy. [Reuters]
