Ramadan drummer attacked in Istanbul

A man thought to be a foreign national living in Istanbul’s Şişli district has attacked a Ramadan drummer with a knife and “stabbed the drum” after a short chase.
Every year, during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, thousands of drummers take to the streets of Turkey in the dark of night.
Dressed in Ottoman-era attire, the drummers wander the streets to wake up residents for sahur, the last meal before a day of fasting that begins before sunrise.
But the age-old tradition of beating Ramadan drums in the wee hours of the morning to wake residents may seem unusual for some.
The drummer went to a police station and filed a complaint after the incident.
Footage showing the attack prompted the authorities to detain the suspect.

Loggerhead sea turtles, also known as Caretta Caretta, have started laying eggs on the Iztuzu beach in Turkey’s western Muğla province, the Environment Ministry said on Thursday.
“Caretta Carettas have started to lay eggs on the Iztuzu beach. The spawning areas on the beach, where around 700 nests have been recorded in the last five years, are under protection. The turtles will hatch and make their way to the sea after approximately 60 days,” the ministry said on Twitter.
Turkey is one of the most important nesting areas for this endangered species. Every year they come to the shore in early summer and lay eggs.
Volunteers guard the beaches along the Mediterranean Sea in Turkey to protect the baby turtles.

Turkey’s tourism income stood at $2.45 billion in January-March, the country’s statistical authority announced on April 30.
The first-quarter revenue fell 40.2 percent compared to the same period last year amid worldwide travel restrictions due to the coronavirus outbreak, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK).
“While 68.8 percent of this income [excluding GSM roaming and marina service expenditures] came from foreign visitors, 31.2 percent came from citizens resident abroad,” TÜİK said.
Data also showed that over 281,300 million Turkish citizens visited abroad in the three-month period, down 83.9 percent on an annual basis.

Istanbul’s evacuation plan for possible big earthquake is ready

Thousands of Istanbulites will be evacuated in a possible earthquake thanks to the new plan created by the Interior Ministry. The city lies atop of the dangerous North Anatolian fault line and marks the border between the Eurasian and Anatolian plates, which have brought some of the world’s most destructive earthquakes in history, claiming the lives of tens of thousands.
The plan, prepared with the cooperation of many public institutions under the coordination of the Interior Ministry, aims to reduce the loss of lives by accelerating the evacuation of people in a potential 7.5 magnitude earthquake.
Speaking to TRT Haber, Gendarmerie Col. Metin Günal provided information about the evacuation.
“Disaster victims who want to go to support provinces or their hometowns will be transferred to the designated evacuation areas to be evacuated by sea, air, land and railway vehicles,” he said.
Disabled citizens will be given priority in evacuations, children, the elderly and women are the groups that are on the list.
Ghost nets haunting Turkish sea turn into appliance parts

A company producing plastic equipment for home appliances joined forces with a local association to find a new use for ghost nets discarded by fishermen. Marine ecosystem polluting nets will be converted into parts for appliances.
The Marmara Islands Ghost Nets Project aims to extract 40,000 square meters of ghost nets (roughly the size of 95 basketball courts) from 25 locations near the eponymous archipelago in the Marmara Sea, off the coast of the western province Balıkesir.
Some 640,000 tons of ghost nets are dumped into the sea every year according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Fishermen often abandon the nets when they are tangled on the rocks under the sea, instead of removing them. Nets upset the food chain by killing small marine creatures entangled in them, trapping smaller fish and exposing them to predators. They also damage coral reefs and ultimately make a habitat for parasites and invasive species unnatural to the area where they are ditched.
