Actor Mike Mitchell found dead in Fethiye
Scottish actor Mike Mitchell, who appeared in the blockbusters “Gladiator” and “Braveheart,” was found dead on Friday at a marina in Fethiye.
Although a heart attack seems to be the most probable cause for his death, 65-year-old Mitchell’s body was sent to Muğla for an autopsy.
Mitchell had previously suffered a serious heart attack in 2006.
His manager said, “It is hard to believe. The sudden death of an international actor we directed, an honest person, a real actor, a true friend, my dear friend, deeply saddened us. I am honoured to have been your manager. My condolences to your wife, dear Denise Mitchell, and your children. Getting to know you and earning your friendship is priceless. Sleep in the lights. RIP.”
Mike had been coming to Turkey for over 21 years, spending a number of months each year at his home in Fethiye and had supported the Turkish Tourist initiative for some years, making several guest appearances around Turkey.
Earlier this year, his work as an Ambassador of Turkey’s Culture and Tourism was recognised and he received an award from Turkey’s Promotion Platform (TUTAP)
Mike has been involved in over 30 films including Braveheart, Gladiator and Skyfall, part of which was filmed in Fethiye, as well as a number of Turkish films, winning the Best Foreign Actor in a Turkish Film award at the Thrace Film Festival in 2019.

Five million holidaymakers flock to Muğla for Eid-al-Adha
Approximately five million holidaymakers flocked to the holiday resorts in Muğla for the nine-day Eid-al-Adha holiday. A number of news articles across the week have highlighted just how busy the region has been. Here are some of the highlights.
The population of Fethiye increased to around a million, with 52,462 vehicles recorded heading into Ölüdeniz on a single day – a possible 200,000 people.
Ölüdeniz Tourism Development Cooperative President Muhammed Kökten patrolled the long queues down to the beach, handing out water to parched drivers and passengers waiting in line.
Both domestic and foreign tourists enjoyed the beach, sea and cooling afternoon breeze in Çalış, with adventurous types enjoying the water sports on offer at Çalış Beach.
When a motorhome owner couldn’t find a place to park due to congestion, much to the surprise of passing pedestrians, he parked it on the walking path in the city centre.
At the end of the holiday, the ordeal to return home began for the five million visitors. Traffic queues as long as 5km formed at Datça, Marmaris, Seydikemer, Fethiye, Dalaman, Ortaca and Köyceğiz , Muğla’s tourist transit ponts.
Gerçek Fethiye reported on Wednesday that Fethiye’s refuse collection teams had gathered 468 tons of garbage – around 160 tons more than usual. It will be interesting to see the final numbers.

10 hectares of maquis area destroyed by fire in Bodrum
10 hectares of maquis area was damaged in a suspected arson attack in Bodrum on Friday.
The fire, which was stared at two separate points in the Dereköy Mahallesi Hayıtözü district, quickly spread due to the wind.
Forestry and firefighters brought the fire under control, but not before 10 hectares of land were damaged.
Local residents witnessed the suspected arsonist behaving suspiciously and fleeing from the scene.

Another round of severe flooding hits northeastern Turkey
Heavy rains caused another round of severe flooding in northeastern Turkey on July 22, 2021. The event comes just a week after six people were killed and two others went missing in the Black Sea province of Rize.
The new round hit the neighboring province of Artvin, overturning vehicles and destroying roads and homes.
Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said around 200 people have been evacuated after the Arhavi River overflowed in the district of Arhavi due to heavy rain. The district centre and village roads in the province have been badly affected, cutting off access to dozens of villages.
Six people trapped in the Arhavi district and 9 in Murgul district were rescued and taken to safe areas.
One person was rescued from the rubble in Arhavi and was taken to a hospital in good condition, AFAD report said.
The event comes just a week after severe floods and landslides left 6 people dead and 2 missing in the province of Rize.
Footage released by the country’s interior ministry showed distressed residents being evacuated from flooded homes.
Cars float down flooded streets as residents rescued
Rescuers pulled inflatable boats in floodwaters gushing through streets of Turkey’s Black Sea district of Arhavi on Thursday to bring those stranded to safety.
