Fethiye streets adorned with Turkish flags ready for Zafer Bayramı

Fethiye Municipality adorned the streets with the Turkish flag on Friday in readiness for Zafer Bayramı.

Turkey celebrates Zafer Bayramı (Victory Day) every year on August 30, commemorating the Turkish victory over Greek forces in the Battle of Dumlupınar (August 26-30, 1922). The outcome of the battle, which took place in Kütahya province in western Turkey, determined the overall outcome of the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1923).

Although foreign forces left the country for good in the autumn of 1922, Turkish people accept August 30 as the date of the Turkish troops’ overall victory. Victory Day was first celebrated in only a few cities in Turkey – such as Ankara, Izmir and Afyonkarahisar – on August 30, 1923. It became a national holiday in 1935.

Animals saved from floods, forest fires in Turkey find new homes

In the northwestern province of Bursa, a farm exclusively set up for traumatized animals is the new shelter for animals injured in fires that raged in Antalya province.

Animal survivors of forest fires and floods, which gripped Turkey last month and in August, are being provided shelter by volunteers after receiving treatment for their injuries.

The Animal Rights Federation (HAYTAP) coordinates the resettlement of animal survivors on the farm.

Treatment of the animals who had not recovered from their injuries will continue on the farm. Utku Yılmaz, a vet on the farm, says they worked to collect as many animals as possible in wildfire-hit areas. “We found some on our own and others were brought to us. Eight vets worked in Antalya, and nearly 100 volunteers aided them to save the animals,” he told Demirören News Agency (DHA) on Thursday. Mahmut Emin, another vet, says most animals survived burns, and the treatment process continued for some. “Some underwent surgeries and others are mostly recovered. Traumatized animals are back to eating and drinking properly,” he said.

Students in Turkey’s disaster areas receive free tablets

Mobile phone operator Turkcell, in coordination with the Ministry of National Education, has donated 10,000 tablet computers to students and teachers in Turkey’s provinces hit by forest fires and floods. The distribution comes ahead of the start of the new school year on September 6.

Turkcell said in a written statement that tablets are being provided to students and teachers in Adana, Antalya, Mersin, Osmaniye and Muğla provinces that were affected by forest fires, as well as in Kastamonu, Sinop and Bartın in northern Turkey, provinces ravaged by floods.

Minister Mahmut Özer said they were working to heal the wounds the disasters left behind and they have already met all the needs of students and teachers working or studying in places hit by disasters, noting that they were providing free stationery materials, and now would deliver donated tablets. Turkcell CEO Bülent Aksu said they mobilized their resources to aid people affected by the floods and forest fires. “We made a small contribution to children and youth and we believe technological support is the best way for their educational gain. The tablets will help them to have easy access to online classes and to conduct research for their homework easily. Teachers will be able to communicate with their students better,” he said.
