Traffic Workshop held in Fethiye

A traffic workshop covering Fethiye, Seydikemer, Köyceğiz, Ortaca and Dalaman Districts was held in the Fethiye District Governorship meeting hall on Friday to evaluate the main issues related to traffic in the five districts.

The workshop was headed up by Fethiye District Governor Eyüp Fırat and was attended by representatives of the Automobile Chambers of Presidency, Traffic Supervision Departments and Fethiye Regional Traffic Supervision Station Headquarters.

Solutions for the problems encountered by the increase in traffic and ways to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by traffic incidents were evaluated.

Fethiye District Governor Eyüp Fırat, who evaluated the traffic workshop said, “Here, together with Seydikemer, Ortaca, Dalaman and Köyceğiz Fethiye, we have evaluated the traffic and basic issues of our five districts. After us, a general evaluation will be made about the whole province headed by our Governor. Traffic is a multidimensional issue, so all stakeholders are here, we have police, gendarmerie, national education, and the highways department. Here, we have considered the most basic issues. What we can do ourselves, those that can be done within the municipality and those that will be done through the Ministries. The general evaluation to be made under the chairmanship of our Governor will now focus on what can be done in practice.”

Animal skeleton of unknown species found in eastern Turkey

Digging in the yard of an old spinning factory in the eastern province of Iğdır last week, some workers discovered an animal skeleton of an unknown species.

The skeleton, which remained intact under the garden, is about 1 meter (3.3 feet) tall and has the teeth of a predator.

Yusuf Kıtay, the operating officer of the excavation, said the workers found the animal skeleton while they were working in an area that has not been used for the last 30-40 years. The shape of the skeleton caught the workers’ attention and they reported the situation to the authorities, Kıtay said, adding: “We especially noticed that its hindlimbs are long. We informed the authorities that it may be an interesting species as its feet do not have hooves but claws, and it also has sharp teeth.”

Turkey to increase forested areas to one-third of country

Turkey wants to increase its forest areas to one-third of the country’s total area by 2023, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Thursday, adding that all countries need to reconsider their policies for a more sustainable world.

Speaking at a ceremony marking National Afforestation Day in Ankara, Erdoğan said current environmental disasters are alarm bells by nature, and every country should regulate their policies according to this fact.

Noting that Turkey set a zero-emission goal by 2053 by participating in the Paris climate agreement, the president said the country puts “green development” at the centre of its 2053 vision about Turkey’s middle- and long-term projections. Erdoğan added that Turkey has planted 5.5 billion saplings since the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) came to power in 2002.

The Paris agreement will enter into force in Turkey on Nov. 10 with the aim of boosting the country’s international standing in the fight against climate change.

Turkish Lira Slides to New Low After Jump in US Inflation

The Turkish lira slid to a record low against the U.S. dollar again on Thursday after a surge in U.S. consumer prices inflamed concerns over President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s push to cut interest rates.

The lira dropped to an all-time low of 9.97 against the dollar early Thursday before settling at around 9.93 against the U.S. currency. The Turkish currency has lost some 25% of its value since the start of the year.

The lira’s slump came after U.S. consumer prices jumped 6.2% in October compared with a year earlier, the highest inflation rate since 1990, according to the U.S. Labor Department. The increase was 0.9% from September to October.

Erdoğan has long been pressing for lower borrowing rates to boost growth. Economists generally view higher interest rates as a curb on inflation, but the Turkish president has repeatedly argued that high interest rates cause prices to increase.

Despite rising inflation, Turkey’s Central Bank has cut the main interest rate by 3 percentage points to 16% from 19% since September, compounding a long run of losses. Turkey’s official inflation rate hit 19.9% in October.
