“The Last Garbage Benders” collect two trucks of garbage around the Peninsula in Fethiye

A group of volunteer environmentalists named The Last Garbage Benders (Son Çöp Bükücüler), who came together via social media in Fethiye, worked with Fethiye Municipality Cleaning Affairs Directorate and collected two truckloads of garbage in the area around the Peninsula on Friday.

Volunteer environmentalists who shared on the subject on social media said, “Please do not throw garbage in our paradise-like Fethiye. We gathered on the Peninsula as volunteer environmentalists called The Last Garbage Benders. We collected two truckloads of garbage. Who knows how many more truckloads there are. City officials also helped us. It may not be visible, but the slopes in this area are full of garbage. There are thousands of glass bottles. The danger of fire is very great in the summer season. Those glass bottles have to be removed before the summer.”

House sales in Muğla increased by 63.7%

According to statistics published by the Turkish Statistical Institute, housing sales in Muğla in December 2021 increased by 63.7 per cent compared to the same period of the previous year.

Of the total of 3,080 sales, 1,107 were first-time buyers and 1,973 were resales. The number of mortgages increased by 32.6%.

Out of 634 mortgaged sales, 216 were first sales and 418 were resales.

Turkiye’s house sales more than double in December

The data also showed that house sales in Turkiye leapt 113.7% year-over-year in December, accelerating a surge a month earlier as locals opted to invest in real estate as a shield against soaring inflation.

Some 226,503 changed hands last month, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) said, up from 178,814 units in November that marked a 60% year-over-year increase.

The data showed December mortgage sales rocketed 209.3% from a year earlier to 45,260.

Sales to foreigners jumped 77% year-over-year to 7,841 properties in December, the data showed, as the lira decline made purchases much cheaper in hard currencies.

Patients whose life depends on electricity at home should be exempt from electricity bills

CHP Muğla Deputy and Planning and Budget Commission Member Süleyman Girgin appealed to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources at the General Assembly of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey to exempt patients who are treated with electrical devices at home from electricity bills.

According to the Turkish Thoracic Society, at least 600 thousand out of 4 million respiratory patients live at home with their devices connected. In addition, it has been reported that 40% of the population over 40 years of age in Turkey has COPD, and nearly 15% of these patients are connected to a ventilator as well as ALS and MS patients who have to use electrical treatment devices in their home. As a result, around 4.5 million patients in Turkey have to use electric treatment devices in their homes.

In Muğla, 391 people use an Oxygen Concentrator, known as a breathing device, connected to electricity.

Girgin said, “Electricity prices have doubled in the last 4 years. It is clear that these exorbitant price hikes make victims of our patients who have to use electrical devices”, requesting that the issue be brought to parliament and residences where these patients live should be exempt from electricity bills.

Erdoğan says Turkiye to bring down prices soon as possible

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Wednesday that Turkiye would bring consumer prices down as soon as possible after annual inflation soared to its highest level in 19 years in December.

Addressing lawmakers from his ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in Parliament, Erdoğan said the inflation figures were not in line with economic realities in Turkiye and he hoped to see the benefits of Ankara’s economic policy in the summer.

Turkiye’s annual inflation rose nearly 36.1% in December, the highest reading since September 2002, according to official data, driven by a slide in the Turkish lira and soaring transport and food prices.

Erdoğan said they would look at inflation in July and revaluate workers’ conditions accordingly after he last month announced a 50% hike in the minimum wage for 2022 to relieve workers.

‘World’s most ridiculous building’ in Turkiye set to be demolished

A building in southern Turkiye, which long topped Google’s results as the “world’s most ridiculous building” will be demolished, according to officials.

The building earned infamy with its odd design and colours and turned into a landmark of Kahramanmaraş.

It was built 30 years ago as a special provincial business centre but was always criticised for standing out awkwardly in the cityscape, he said.

The Special Provincial Administration Business Center will be replaced with a square after the planned demolition, Mayor Hayrettin Gungor said.

The demolition is expected to take four months.

‘Dangerous’ dogs off streets as Turkish ban begins

A nationwide ban came into force Friday in Turkiye against dog breeds considered dangerous. Dogs on the list of breeds need to be sterilized and registered with authorities or their owners will face fines and their animals will be forcibly taken from them.

The new regulation is part of a wider animal rights bill implemented last year and also brings fines on those who abandon the dogs instead of handing them over to shelters. All dogs will be sterilized at veterinary clinics before their registration and will be fitted with microchips to track their status. Owners are also required to keep their dogs on a leash and cover their mouths with muzzles at all times to prevent attacks on people and other animals. They are also barred from public spaces like playgrounds.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, which oversees the ban and registration practices, announced Friday afternoon that 20,843 dangerous dogs have been registered throughout the country and fitted with microchips.

Though no exact figures are available, animal shelters across the country run by municipalities have seen a surge in the number of dangerous dogs either abandoned or voluntarily handed over by their owners.
