Turkiye marks 101st anniversary of national anthem
Turkey marked the 101st anniversary of the Istiklal Marşı, or March of Independence, Turkiye’s national anthem on Friday.
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality celebrated the anniversary with a march from Cumhuriyet Square to Konak Atatürk Square, accompanied by the National Anthem played by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Band.
The Turkish national anthem was written in 1921 during the War of Independence as Turkiye battled occupation by foreign forces after World War I.
It was penned in order to encourage the fighting army and to motivate the struggling nation. It is also the official anthem of the Republic of Turkiye, founded two years later in 1923.
The anthem, consisting of 41 lines and 10 stanzas, centres around timeless themes such as independence, war, civilization, faith, spirituality, courage, heroism and hope. Only the first 8 lines are performed in official ceremonies.

Gendarmerie teams seal 67 illegal constructions in Fethiye
Muğla Provincial Gendarmerie Command carrying out inspections within the scope of the Zoning Law and the Law on the Protection of Cultural and Natural Heritage, identified 67 new constructions in the Kayaköy and Karakeçiler neighborhoods of Fethiye that were against legal regulations. The structures in question were sealed by Fethiye Municipality.
Gendarmerie teams set up security measures at entrances and exits of Kayaköy and Karakeçiler neighborhoods in order to prevent further illegal building activities.
Control inspections continue.

Bahriye Üçok public house in Fethiye resists inflation
Despite the increase in inflation Bahriye Üçok Park Halk Evi (Public House) in Fethiye is maintaining its affordable menu by keeping price hikes to a minimum.
Zülgarneyn Gök, who is responsible for the Halk Evi, told Gerçek Fethiye that they had had to make small increases of 1-2 liras, for example the price of cheese toast increased from 9 liras to 10 liras and hamburger from 18 liras to 20 liras. Apart from that, they have lived up to the promise of Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca and tea continues, and will continue, to be priced at 1 lira.
Regular visitors to the Halk Evi are smiling and satisfied.

Istanbul’s Unkapanı Bridge closed after deck splits
A bridge connecting Istanbul’s central European side to the historical peninsula has been closed down after its deck reportedly started splitting.
The crack in the Unkapanı Bridge, which crosses over Haliç, reportedly began forming on March 11 after a strong wind amid a heavy snowfall in the city.
The split is reported to be as long as 10-15 centimeters, and teams have been dispatched to the bridge to carry out maintenance works.
The bridge, built in 1940, connects Istanbul’s Fatih and Beyoğlu districts.

Turkish lira rebounds after Putin signals progress in talks
The lira rebounded from an earlier slump to rally 1.5% on Friday, benefiting along with other emerging market currencies after Russian President Vladimir Putin said he sees “positive shifts” in talks with Ukraine.
The lira has suffered since Russia invaded Ukraine given the economic fallout from sanctions on Moscow are expected to spark higher inflation and a wider current account deficit in Turkiye.
The currency rallied 1.5% on Friday afternoon, touching 14.65 against the dollar by 1413 GMT, after having earlier weakened 0.8% to just shy of 15. It has declined in the last eight straight sessions.
The rally came after Putin said some progress had been made in Moscow’s talks with Ukraine. “There are certain positive shifts, negotiators on our side tell me. I will talk about all of this later,” he said.
The lira is still down 10% this year and is nearly at half its value compared to a year ago, having shed 44% in 2021. Western sanctions on Russia sent energy prices soaring, ratcheting up Turkiye’s already hefty import bill.
The jump in gas, oil and grains prices stoked Turkiye’s surging inflation and widened its current account deficit. Inflation exceeded 54% in February and is expected to remain elevated all year.
