Injured Mediterranean Seal could not be saved
An injured Mediterranean monk seal was found on the coast of Milas Ören Türkevleri on Monday..
The injured seal was in serious condition and, although treated by officials of the Regional Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, could not be saved.
Listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act and designated as depleted under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the Mediterranean monk seal numbers no more than 700 animals worldwide with around 10 living off the coasts of Turkey.
In a statement made by the Mediterranean Conservation Society, it was determined that the Mediterranean monk seal, which was found to be a young male individual, was injured by a firearm. Considered as critically endangered in the Mediterranean, each member of the Mediterranean monk seal’s species is of critical importance for the continuation of the generation. As the Mediterranean Conservation Society, we are working in cooperation with the authorities to protect this rare creature. In addition, we are actively continuing our awareness raising efforts on the importance of the species.

Izmir preparing to welcome first cruise ship in years
Izmir, Turkey’s third-largest city and a major holiday destination on the country’s Aegean coast, is preparing to welcome its first cruise ship after years of hiatus.
Work is underway at Alsancak port, where this year’s first cruise ship will dock on April 14.
The revamping of the Alsancak Port is part of the effort to lure more international tourists into the city.
Local authorities expect around 34 cruise ships to visit İzmir this year, bringing thousands of holidaymakers.
In 2021, nearly 640,00 foreign tourists visited the city, up nearly 135 percent compared to 2020, and 6,500 of those visitors arrived by sea, according to the Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism.
In 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the international travel and tourism industry, Izmir hosted more than 1.2 million foreign holidaymakers.

Landslide at Bolu Tunnel exit disrupts Istanbul-Ankara motorway
The Istanbul-Ankara Motorway, connecting Turkey’s capital with the country’s economic and cultural hub, was partially closed to traffic on Saturday as a landslide blocked the entrance of the Mount Bolu Tunnel.
The landslide, which took place on the northern end of the tunnel, covered all three lanes in the Ankara direction and one lane in the Istanbul direction with earth and rocks through a 50-meter (55-yard) section of the motorway.
The General Directorate of Highways (KGM) said in a statement that the landslide coincided with iftar, the fast-breaking dinner during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, thus reducing the number of vehicles to a minimum.
No vehicles were stuck in the earth.

German Shepherd dog joins Turkey’s zero waste efforts
In a world polluted by humans, it is also their responsibility to curb it. Raven, however, demonstrates that animals can contribute to this growing struggle. A German Shepherd dog, Raven has learned quickly how to act responsibly in protecting the environment.
Raven occasionally tours parks with his owner, Musab Subuh, in Istanbul and whenever he comes across a discarded plastic bottle or any other plastic material dumped by humans, the dog grabs it and hands it to his owner.
Two-year-old Raven began his training about a year ago. Subuh first started teaching him how to carry plastic trash to the dumpster at home. He picked up water bottles first as Raven “loves drinking water.” Rewarding the dog for every time he picked up a plastic bottle, Subuh finally managed to teach Raven how to spot plastic bottles that need to be properly dumped, among other things, from toys to slippers. Then, Subuh took Raven outside and tried him with littered plastic bottles in public places. Over time, Raven succeeded. Now, whenever he sees a plastic bottle, the pet dog grabs it in his mouth and hands it over to Subuh.
He now plans to train Raven further, so that the dog can dump the plastic bottles and other objects into the garbage containers by himself, instead of handing them over to his owner, or at least leaving them next to a garbage container.

Anadolu Agency launches Turkiye’s first Environmental Editorial Unit
Anadolu Agency launched its Environmental Editorial Unit on Friday to raise social awareness about climate change and environmental issues.
The unit will share special news, detailed files and analysis on climate with its followers with the aim of becoming a leading news agency in the world in this field.
“The Environmental Editorial Unit, which has been launched as part of Anadolu Agency’s Greenline, will follow the developments in this field across the world with its expert editors and reporters. Our long-term goal is to become the leading news agency in the world on climate change and environmental issues,” said Anadolu Agency Chairman of the Board and Director-General Serdar Karagoz.
“In line with this goal, through using new media tools, we will raise awareness at the global level by bringing up both the problems and solution proposals in the field of global warming, climate change and environment,” said Karagoz noted.
The Istanbul-based unit called “Greenline” deals with many issues in the field of the environment such as climate change, global warming, pollution, zero waste, recycling, sustainability and green energy.
