Fethiye Governor takes part in Highway Traffic Week event
Highway Traffic Week takes place between 7-13 May, and to start the events in Fethiye, brochures explaining ‘Safe Traffic in 5 Steps for Pedestrians’ were distributed to drivers at Ölüdeniz Road Traffic Control Point
Fethiye District Governor Alper Balcı, Fethiye District Police Chief İsmail Ayhan, and District Gendarmerie Commander Major Mustafa Çiçek took part in the event, handing out brochures, talking to drivers and stressing the importance of keeping pedestrians safe.

Thousands flock to Turkey’s Edirne for Roma festival Kakava
Two days of events to mark Kakava, a version of Hıdırellez celebrations marked in the Turkic world and the Balkans, culminated with an event on Friday on the banks of the Tunca (Tundzha) river in the northwestern province of Edirne.
Kakava is a festival marked by the Roma community but draws a large number of people to the province every year, including tourists from Bulgaria and neighbouring Edirne.
The festivities began on Thursday with the traditional burning of the Kakava bonfire, with revellers dancing on the streets until the early hours of Friday. When the new day dawned, a procession headed to the river, to make wishes and wash their faces as part of customs.
Edirne is famous for the annual Kırkpınar oil wrestling tournament and the festival kicked off on the historic ground where the tournament is held, with people lighting up a giant bonfire. On Friday morning, people left pieces of paper they wrote down their wishes to Tunca while some tore apart branches of trees on the banks, to hang them on their doors to bring prosperity to their homes.
Most participants in Friday’s event sought a complete end to the pandemic while some hung coronavirus masks on tree branches along the river banks.

Influx from Europe a morale boost for uneasy Turkish tourism industry
An influx of tourists from Europe, particularly Germany and Britain, two of the markets the Turkish tourism sector missed during the coronavirus pandemic, has provided encouragement for an industry worried about the potential impact of the war in Ukraine.
Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine is expected to hit the arrivals from Turkey’s top tourist sources, just as the crucial sector has continued to recover from the impact of measures to combat the spread of COVID-19 since 2020.
Industry officials remain optimistic about arrivals from Russia in Antalya, one of the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean, and are encouraged by bookings and arrivals from Europe.
More than 1.11 million foreign tourists arrived in Antalya between January through the end of April, according to data compiled from the provincial culture and tourism directorate.
It marks a 162% increase compared to some 423,773 tourists who arrived in the four months of last year.
Tourists coming in from the U.K., a crucial market for Turkey, boomed by 947% on annual basis in March to 87,349.
Some British tour operators are said to have added additional capacity for flights to Turkey, while industry officials expect flights from Russia to gain momentum this month.

Reforestation efforts in areas destroyed by forest fires bear fruit
The latest photographs released by the General Directorate of Forestry show how areas affected by wildfires in recent years are recovering.
Thanks to reforestation and natural regeneration efforts, forests are thriving again in the districts of Marmaris, Datça and Bodrum in Muğla province, Yenice in Kütahya province, Seferihisar in Izmir province and in Çamköy of Denizli, Intepe of Çanakkale, Ayvalık of Balıkesir and in Antalya, which was hit hardest by last summer’s wildfires.
One of the photos shows the areas before and after the forest fires around Torba Bay near the resort town of Bodrum. An area of nearly 3,000 square meters had burst into flames in a wildfire that took five days to be put out in 2020. With 490,000 newly underplanted Turkish pines, the area has been forested again.
Gökhan Ergan, a fire ecologist from Hacettepe University, warned against new forest fires as the weather warms up across the country.
“As of May, we could see temperatures rise and the rate of humidity decreases. Under these circumstances, plants in a forest could easily catch fire,” he noted.
Lighting a fire around forestlands should be strictly banned and travellers should only be allowed to camp in designated places, he said.
It takes around 25 years to reforest an area after a fire, he added.
Turkey saw hundreds of forest fires erupt in its southern and southwestern provinces last summer, destroying swathes of land. With intensive and dedicated efforts, all of the blazes were brought under control in over two weeks.

Turkey now at world’s sixth-highest inflation rate
Prices in Turkey rose by almost 70 per cent in April, according to new official statistics. The new figure gives Turkey the dubious honour of having the sixth-highest inflation rate in the world. It comes as Turkey’s President continues to insist interest rates be cut to stem inflation, the opposite of what conventional economists recommend. The rising prices are putting further pressure on Turks, who are struggling to make ends meet. DW News asked some people on the streets of Istanbul how inflation is impacting their lives.

With all matches played, Fethiyespor finished the season in second place on the league table, ten points behind leader Erokspor.
