Public beach planned for Kocaçalış
Fethiye Municipality Directorate of Reconstruction and Urbanization started the demolition of illegal structures on Kocaçalış beach.
Once the demolition works are complete, a public beach will be built in the area, similar to those in Karaot and Inlice to serve citizens at affordable prices.

‘Zero waste’ saves Turkish economy billions, cuts carbon emissions
In its fifth year, the zero waste recycling scheme initiated by first lady Emine Erdoğan has helped Turkey to save TL 30 billion ($1.8 billion) and curb greenhouse gas emissions amounting to 3 million tons
The Ministry of Environment, Urban Planning and Climate Change announced its latest figures regarding the revolutionary zero waste project that accelerated the country’s recycling efforts at a time of climate change.
Since its inception in 2017, the project has given back more than $1.8 billion (TL 30 billion) to the economy that would typically have been wasted. In addition, it saved 265 million trees and prevented the emission of 3 million tons of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere that would further pollute the air in the country already grappling with the impact of climate change.
Zero waste is the main theme of Environment Week, observed between June 1 and June 7 for the first time, and the government hopes to raise more awareness about the issue with nationwide events celebrating recycling and other environment-friendly practices.
The project, coordinated by the ministry, was first implemented in government offices, with several ministries adopting the scheme by sorting out their waste at the source instead of random disposal. In five years, the number of public agencies and private companies adhering to the practice has reached 140,000. Figures by the ministry show the country’s recycling rate, which was 13% when the project kicked off in 2017, was 25% in 2021. The ministry said in a written statement that its next goal was to bring it to 35% in 2023.
It also branched out to seas under the title of “zero waste blue” to save bodies of water from pollution through massive cleanup campaigns. As of 2022, the amount of maritime waste collected and delivered to proper disposal facilities reached about 134,000 tons.
The ministry said a drop in plastic bag usage also contributed to the reduction of plastic waste. In the three years since the government introduced a paid plastic scheme, use dropped by 65%, preventing some 550,000 tons of plastic waste, equivalent to a savings worth about $230 million (TL 3.8 billion). This, in turn, prevented more than 22,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

Speed limits on highways increased starting July
Turkey has approved plans to increase speed limits by 10 to 20 kilometers per hour (kph) on the country’s highways.
Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu disclosed the plans in early May. On June 2, the Interior Ministry issued a statement stating that speed limits will be increased from 120 to 130 kph on some roads and from 120 to 140 kph on other roads.
The speed limit will be 140 kph for highways whose construction works are ongoing and will open to service in the future.
The new speed limits will come into force as of July 1, the statement added.
The Interior Ministry’s directive was sent to the governor’s offices in all 81 provinces.

Turkish inflation soars to 73%, highest since 1998
Turkey’s annual inflation rate jumped to a 24-year high of 73.5% in May, fuelled by the war in Ukraine, rising energy prices and a tumbling lira — though the figure was slightly lower than economists had feared.
Inflation has surged since last autumn, when the lira slumped after the central bank launched a 500 basis-point easing cycle sought by President Tayyip Erdogan.
The latest figure surpassed the 73.2% touched in 2002 and is the highest since October 1998, when annual inflation was 76.6% and Turkey was battling to end a decade of chronically high inflation. Nevertheless, the consensus forecast was for annual inflation to rise to 76.55%.
Month-on-month consumer prices rose 2.98%, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) said on Friday, compared to a Reuters poll forecast of 4.8%.
Transport and food costs have soared by 108% and 92% respectively over the last year, reflecting a deepening economic crisis for Turks struggling to afford basic goods. The domestic producer price index climbed 8.76% month-on-month in May for an annual rise of 132.16%.

A fantastic evening on Monday to celebrate the Fethiyespor play-offs championship win. The team received a rapturous reception as they toured Fethiye in an open-topped bus accompanied by fans on everything from pushbikes and scooters to lorries decked with lights, all sounding their horns to a chorus of the Fethiyespor anthem!
People lined the streets and danced in the roads, lit fireworks and cheered the lads back to Beşkaza Meydanı where a huge crowd was waiting expectantly.
The cheering, singing and revelry were a true sight to behold.

Fethiyespor are now promoted to TFF League 2. The draw for League 2 will take place on 10-15th July with the fixture list being drawn up by the end of July.
The first match of League 2 will take place on 27th August 2022.
