Last week we brought you an article on World Environment Day, now celebrated in Turkey as World Environment Week, and the activities that were planned to take place in Fethiye.

FETAV Creative Group Bird Sanctuary Show
FETAV Creative Drama Group performed a theatrical show called “Bird Sanctuary Waste Paradise”. Written by Kıvanç Galip Över and staged by Gülşen Yegen, the theatrical show named “Kuş Cenneti Waste Cenneti” was performed by children of the group and aimed to draw attention to the bird sanctuary and the impact of waste.
Let’s Keep our World Clean
A video, produced by the Keep Fethiye Clean Association founded by local resident Virginia Howes, was shown at Fethiye Municipality Özer Olgun Culture after being awarded 1st prize in the first round of an international competition about voluntary work held by Rotary clubs.
Activities held at Şehit Fethi Bey Parkı on Wednesday included a bicycle and kite festival, talks by environment groups and DEKAMER Sea Turtles Hospital, followed by a bird watching event at the Çalış Bird Sanctuary
“Don’t Accelerate, Push the Pedal”
A bicycle ride took place from Fethiye Municipality Özer Olgun Culture to Şehit Fethi Bey Parkı to highlight the benefits to both health and the environment of riding a bike. Fethiye District Governor Alper Balcı and Fethiye Deputy Mayor Oğuz Bolelli took part in the ride.
Let’s go fly a kite
The Kite Festival was one of the events organised as part of World Environment Week and was attended by Fethiye District Governor Alper Balcı, Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca who joined locals having fun flying their multi-coloured kites.
Awareness of envıronmental issues
Environment groups gave talks on the environmental issues we are facing and DEKAMER Sea Turtles Hospital gave a talk on the protection of sea life. Son Çöp Bükücüler (The Last Waste Benders), a group of volunteer environmentalists supported by young students also took part in the event.
“Ocak” documentary
The first screening of the documentary Ocak (meaning burned homes ın Turkish), filmed and directed by Ömer Öner took place in Kabaağaç in Seydikemer. The documentary was filmed during the fires in the summer of 2021 in Antalya’s Manavgat and many districts of Muğla, and afterwards when Ömer spoke with locals in the devastated areas.
The event also included a display of photographs taken during the firefighting efforts and in the aftermath taken by Ömer.
Ocak will be shown again on Thursday, June 16th at 20:30 at Fethiye Municipality Özer Olgun Culture Centre. The screening will have English subtitles.
