A new breath for the future: Türkiye’s forestation drive returns

Türkiye on Friday marked National Forestation Day as thousands of saplings were planted across the country and abroad during events organized by the Ministry of Forestry and Agriculture.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry organized nationwide planting events under the theme of “Breath for the Century of Türkiye,” in line with the government’s ambitious vision for development.

The main event was attended by Vice President Fuat Oktay and Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Vahit Kirişçi in Ankara where about 100,000 saplings were planted in an area covering 2,023 square meters representing the centenary of the Republic of Türkiye, in the logo’s shape of the “Century of Türkiye.” Similar-shaped prospective forests were also planted in other provinces. Friday’s drive aimed to plant 4 million saplings in 1,023 locations in 81 provinces.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who plants a sapling on Nov. 11 every year, missed the national events this year but joined other country leaders of Turkic states who planted saplings in Uzbekistan’s Samarkand, where they came together for the 9th Organization of Turkic States (OTS) summit.

In Fethiye, 2023 saplings were planted in an event organised by the General Directorate of Forestry at 11.11 am in Değirmenbaşı Sapling Planting Area.

The event was attended by District Governor, Alper Balcı, members of the protocol, students and citizens.

Türkiye set to ramp up fight against climate change in 2023

Türkiye has ratified the Paris climate agreement and is focusing on conforming to the European Union Green Deal as it plans to implement a number of projects across an array of fields from transportation to industry, agriculture and trade as of 2023.

The Ministry of Industry and Technology will carry out projects and create “Green Organized Industrial Zones (OIZs)” where electric vehicles will be produced in a bid to lower the country’s carbon emission rates and encourage a transition to a cleaner way of travel. The ministry will also prepare a noise map for areas where 3 million vehicles pass annually after determining noise levels on main roads.

Action Plans for Adaptation to Climate Change will include the reduction of carbon emissions, carbon-free airports, green transformation of railways, and an ecosystem-oriented food production model.

Patent application filed for Cleopatra’s youth elixir in Tarsus

A café owner in the southern province of Mersin’s Tarsus district has applied to get a patent for the youth elixir of Egypt’s queen Cleopatra who became the main theme of a festival held in the district.

The first International Tarsus Festival organized by Mersin Metropolitan Municipality for the promotion of the district was held with the theme of “Year of Cleopatra” as the Egyptian queen and the Roman emperor candidate Marcus Antonius met in the district.

During the three-day festival attended by 27 countries, the visitors tasted the youth elixir, believed to be drunk by Cleopatra for immortality, prepared with medicinal plants growing in the highlands of the Taurus Mountains.

Serpil Demir, the owner of a café in the region, prepared the elixir as a drink option on the menu and has applied to obtain a patent for this special elixir, which is unique only to Tarsus, with the support of the authorities in the region.
