“We will hand over this sacred flag to our young people,” he added.

Turkey is due to hold nationwide elections in 2023.

Turkish inflation eases for 1st time in more than a year

Türkiye’s inflation fell for the first time in 18 months, a sign of moderating price pressures as the country’s central bank ended its interest-rate-cutting cycle.

The consumer price index–which measures what consumers pay for goods and services–increased 84.4% in November compared with the same month a year earlier, down from an 85.5% rise in October, data from the national statistics office Turkstat showed Monday.

November marks the first fall in annual inflation since May 2021, and it was mainly driven by the statistical effect of a high base the same month a year earlier.

The sharpest increases in annual prices were in the transportation sector, at 107%, followed by food and non-alcoholic drinks prices at 102.55%, according to official data.

Some experts have questioned the state institutes’ figures and the Inflation Research Group, which is made up of independent economists, said on Monday that Turkey’s true inflation rate for November is 170.7%.

Rent prices rise 159 percent in October

The average increase in rent prices across Türkiye was 159 percent in October compared to the same month of last year, according to a recent study.

The study, which was carried out jointly by the Center for Economic and Social Research (BETAM) at Bahçeşehir University and the online classified advertisements platform sahibinden.com, showed that the average rental price rose to 62.2 Turkish Lira per square meter.

In the face of rocketing property prices and rents, the government recently launched a massive social housing project to bring house prices under control.

The “My First Home My First Workplace Project,” announced last month, includes the development of a total of 500,000 houses in all 81 provinces of the country and 50,000 workplaces.
