A Fethiye Christmas is definitely not to be missed. Mooch around the town centre at this time of year and it doesn’t take long to see that it’s brimming over with what many would see as ‘traditional’ Christmas decorations – even though Turkish people buy them for New Year celebrations.
Look a bit harder or think outside the box and it’s clear that there are also plenty of alternative festive ideas too – just waiting to cheer up your home.
Fethiye takes Santa to heart
At first glance this may seem rather strange as Christmas isn’t celebrated in Turkey, is it?
In fact, Turkish people have taken Santa Claus to their hearts as a cheerful symbol for the New Year.
As a result he can been seen hanging around (sometimes literary) all over the place.
Fethiye Christmas: Bright lights, glitter and snow men
Over the last decade, Turkish shops are increasingly full of lights and decorations at this time of year that many would recognize as part of the Christian Christmas festival.
Fethiye is no exception and in the shops around the central everyday market, as well as in other parts of town, there are lots Yuletide-style bits and pieces waiting to brighten any home.
We found these in the shops around town:
Some alternative ideas
There’s plenty of fruit for cheerful table decorations and citrus wreaths. You can even use a few dried chili peppers, cinnamon sticks and whole cloves:
Nature lends a hand
If you’re feeling a bit crafty, why not collect fir cones and berries, add paint, ribbons, glitter or leave them natural?
Add a few candles and you have a natural masterpiece.
We found a range of lanterns, which with a bit of imagination could make a wonderful centerpiece.
Thinking outside the box
If creativity is rally your thing, try collecting bits of wood, clothes pegs, shells, branches; there is sure to be something, somewhere to make an alternative ‘tree.’
