Two houses and one orchard go up in flames
Seydikemer Orchard blaze
On 12th April in Seydikemer there was a blaze in the Alaçat neighborhood. The fire is believed to have started as a result of dry undergrowth and a strong breeze. The flames damaged a nearby greenhouse, as well as olive and pomegranate trees and grape vines. Firefighters put out the fire with the help of villagers.
Karachula
On 14th April a fire broke out in a single-storey house near the park in Karaculha. Fire fighters came to the scene to extinguish the blaze. According to local media a Syrian family lived in the house.
Şovalye Island

The following day a fire broke out in a 3-storey villa Şovalye Island, reported to be valued in the region of 2.5 million Turkish Lira. The firefighting teams got to the island from the jetty at Şat in Çalış. They managed to put out the fire but the property was badly damaged. Residents on the island were told that the fire may have resulted from an electrical fault.
Turkish referendum

The referendum for changing Turkey’s constitution took place on Sunday 16th April. The local and national media showed a particular interest in dual nationals voting in Fethiye. One voter who caught the attention of the media was Kathy Salman.
When 98% of the ballot boxes had been opened, the results nationwide were given as ‘YES’ votes 51.4%, ‘NO’ votes 48.6%. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, gave a speech “calling for unity, and a new beginning after a narrow win.”

Enduro Championships coming to Fethiye

Turkish media announced this week that British motorcyclist, Graham JARVIS (Husqvarna), will be coming to Fethiye for the World Xtreme Enduro Championships, which will take place between 29-30 April 2017.
Accident on Ölüdeniz hill
A car overturned and ended up in the ditch on the steep hill leading to Ölüdeniz last Thursday. According to reports, the accident happened as a result rain making the road slippery. The injured driver was taken to hospital by ambulance.
Finishing touches for new Patlangıç – Ölüdeniz road

The road markings and cycle lanes are now complete for the stretch of road between Patlangıç and the first part of the road leading to Ölüdeniz. This massive project has been ongoing over the winter months.
Göcek centre getting a makeover
Fethiye started a street beautification project in Gocek. On the main shopping street, special stone paving has been completed. The buildings are being painted in pastel colors, unsightly signs are being removed and air conditioning units are being covered. Landscaping and seating areas are being created to make Göcek an upmarket attraction.
Marching or going round in circles?
