Sunderland to Sofra challenge raises over £3,500 for MacMillan Cancer Support.
Earlier this summer we wrote an article about Ian Watson and Carol Robb who were cycling from Sunderland to Sofra Bar in Dalyan in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
After four weeks on the road and many adventures, Ian and Carol arrived in Dalyan on 24th June to a rapturous welcome.
Rebecca Carter went along to talk to them on behalf of Fethiye Times.
Carol and Ian’s story
Carol and Ian are local heroes in Dalyan. They have their own property and have been holidaying here for over ten years.
Back home in Sunderland they own a bike shop. This, along with Dalyan, is where their true passion lies. Carol and Ian had a secret dream of one day cycling from their home in Sunderland to their home in Dalyan.
Over the years many of their friends and family have been diagnosed with cancer. Sadly, some people have been lost but others have survived. It was this that inspired them to dedicate the journey to the Macmillan Cancer charity.
Ian had spent years poring over possible routes while they dreamed, what might seem, the impossible. With the help of various apps and websites, they began to formulate a plan.
First the ferry to Amsterdam, down through Germany. A quick dip into France, through Switzerland. Then on to Italy before catching a ferry to Greece, across Greece with a final ferry to Turkey. A piece of cake on paper!
Owning a bike shop obviously helped when it came to choosing their bikes. As comfortable as possible but also capable of carrying everything they needed. Quite a tall order.
So, they packed up their chosen Giant Toughroad bikes with two panniers on the back of each and hopped on the ferry from North Shields to Amsterdam. They had no idea where they would be staying, mainly because they had no idea how many kilometres they could do in a day. Disembarking from the ferry a little dazed and confused they got slightly lost but soon discovered the beauty of cycling in Europe. Flat, wide cycle paths zipping through forests and fields.
However, they realised that 100 miles a day was a bit ambitious when a full day of a vicious headwind quickly tired them out.
Generally they were lucky with the weather, hardly any rain and only hitting very high temperatures once they got to Greece. One of Carol and Ian’s favourite places was the nature reserves of the Rhine where they saw eagles, herons, bluebirds, deer and so much more flora and fauna than is possible to list.
Next up was Switzerland, generally agreed to be both staggeringly beautiful and staggeringly expensive. It is worth pointing out that Carol and Ian funded this entire trip themselves. Every penny, and lira, that was donated went to Macmillan.
Italy was also a cyclists dream with plenty of routes. Greece, on the other hand, was terrifying. Although it was only about seven miles, the traffic and heat made it one of the toughest parts of the trip.
After catching the ferry to Marmaris, Carol and Ian felt that they were on the home straight. But anyone who has ever been to Marmaris knows what the climb out of the town is like! Now imagine you have spent the past four weeks on a bike. The add to that over four miles uphill, followed by another mile with a 10% climb on the main road added to that 46.5-degree heat. Not easy!
But, they made it and received a fantastic welcome in Dalyan. Everyone here is so proud of them.
So far they have raised a fantastic £3,356.63 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Four people caught shopping with counterfeit money.
Four people caught shopping with counterfeit money were arrested in Fethiye on Saturday.
After being taken into custody, one of the suspects tried to swallow the 100 TL counterfeit bank notes.
The notes were removed by police from the mouth of the suspect.
The suspects will be charged and referred to the justice system for proceedings.
4.8-magnitude earthquake in Bodrum
A 4.8-magnitude earthquake shook the Aegean resort of Bodrum on Saturday, just five days after a 5.1 tremor hit the area following another major quake last month.
According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the quake occurred at a depth of around 21.79 kilometres at 2.16 p.m.
The earthquake was also felt in the neighbouring Menteşe, Milas, Yatağan, Kavaklıdere and Ula districts.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, according to local officials.
The popular resort has been struck by several earthquakes in recent weeks, with a 5.1-magnitude hitting it on Aug. 8. At least 490 quakes were recorded in the aftermath of the tremor.
The 5.1-magnitude earthquake came less than three weeks after the Aegean resort was rattled by a 6.6-magnitude earthquake on July 21.
At least two people, including one Turkish citizen, were killed on the Greek island of Kos by the strong earthquake. The earthquake was felt in the Aegean province of Muğla and its districts.

Fethiyespro season tickets now available.
Fethiyespor 2017/18 season tickets are now available from the Fethiyespor football stadium. The prices are:
Kapalı (main stand) – 250 LT
Maraton (opposite main stand) – 120 TL
New shirts for the 2017/18 season will also be available from the Fethiyespor Store in Fethiye from 21 st August

Turkish Money
The British Pound bought 4.60 Turkish Lira (TL) by the close of business on Friday.
The week before it was selling for 4.59TL.
