Turkey to continue to keep daylight saving time

On 8th September 2016 the Turkish government took the decision to remain on DST (Daylight Saving Time) throughout the year and clocks were not put back an hour in line with the UK and many other countries at the end of the summer.
Turkey moved to Daylight Saving Time on March 27, 2016, at 3.00 a.m. local time (01:00GMT), moving clocks forward one hour, and has not resumed standard Turkish time since.
The Turkish government intends to continue with daylight saving so it will be the same this year.
What does this mean for you?
When the UK turns the clocks back on Sunday 29th October, it means that Turkey will be three hours ahead. In March 2018, when the UK puts the clocks forward, the time in Turkey will stay the same. This means the country will be two hours ahead.
Without the ‘fall back’ evenings will stay lighter but mornings will stay darker for longer meaning children have to go to school before sunrise.
Those who enjoy watching live broadcasts on UK television will now have to wait an extra hour to tune in.
For those of you who live in Turkey and regularly chat to friends and loved ones back in the UK, you will either have to stay up later in the evenings or persuade your friends and family to set their alarms earlier.
You will also need to think about flights times ( particularly on 29th October) as the arrival and departure times may be affected. All passengers are advised to check their flight times with the relevant airline before flying. Please bear in mind that, in case of midnight flights, it’s even possible that the date of the flight may change

Turkey to extend state of emergency declared after coup for the fifth time

Turkey’s government says it will ask parliament to extend the state of emergency that was declared following last year’s failed military coup for a fifth time.
Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdağ said on Monday the state of emergency would be prolonged by a further three months to allow a “more effective” fight against the coup-plotters and what he called terrorist groups.
Turkey launched a massive crackdown after the coup, arresting some 50,000 people and dismissing more than 110,000 from government jobs.
Critics say the government has used its emergency powers to go after all opponents, including politicians, journalists and activists.
The state of emergency was due to expire on Oct. 19.
President Recep Tayyıp Erdoğan has said it would be regularly extended until calm is restored.

Archeologists have discovered a 5,000-year-old handmade toy chariot in the depths of a child’s grave while excavating a group of tombs in the ancient city of Soğmatar in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa, Southern Turkey.
The ancient toy was found among a rattle and other objects when scientists searched the large underground necropolis and came upon the tomb of a young child.
“In one of these tombs, we found a four-wheeled miniature horse carriage, a children’s toy, as well as a rattle with a bird motif,” Yusuf Albayrak, Assistant Professor at Harran University’s Archaeology Department, told Hurriyet Daily News.

“Children’s toys were buried in children’s tombs. We thus know that rattles existed for children 5,000 years ago.
Soğmatar, located in the Eyyübiye district’s Yağmurlu neighborhood, is 80 kilometers away from Şanlıurfa and is among the world’s oldest settlements. It is believed to be the place where the Prophet Moses lived after escaping from Egypt.
