Welcome to our article outlining everything you need to know about the Türkiye’yi Temiz Tut Project and what you can do to help.
What does it mean?
“Türkiye’yi Temiz Tut” means “Keep Turkey Clean”. We like to think big!
How did it start?
Mick Scarsbrook (Mick Amca) has lived in Turkey for many years and spends a lot of time making promotional videos about Fethiye and the surrounding areas.
Mick feel very passionately about protecting the environment and disposing of rubbish responsibly and, being out and about recording videos, was becoming increasingly aware of the scale of the problem in Fethiye. As a result, he decided to make a video about the rubbish problem.

The video went viral and attracted the interest of Fethiye Belediyesi Çevre Koruma ve Kontrol Müdürlüğü (Fethiye Municipality Environmental Protection and Control Department). From there, a relationship of mutual respect and working together was born.

How did Türkiye’yi Temiz Tut come about?
Usually, people arrange a meal with friends or a party to celebrate their birthday. Not Mick, he arranged a birthday cleanup in the forest near Hillside Beach Club with friends and helpers from the municipality.

Fethiye Times went along to cover the cleanup, held a further meeting with Mick and Kate Topcu (Çalış Kids Club), and Türkiye’yi Temiz Tut was born. The Facebook Page was created, new people came on board to form a steering group, and the project was set up.
What is the aim of the project?
Our aim is to keep Fethiye beautiful, clean and healthy through education, raising awareness, organised cleanups and campaigns.
What’s happened so far?
There’s been a lot going on within the project.
Promoting Türkiye’yi Temiz Tut
Mick is the founder and face of the project and is involved in a lot of promotional activity. He’s been interviewed on Turkish National TV and radio and has also been presented with awards for his contribution.

Awards
Mick received the 2017 Blue Wave Special Award for his contributions to raising awareness towards land and marine-based pollution.

Mick also gave a speech and received an award from the Municipality on World Environment day last June.

Other activities
Various organised cleanups have taken place.
Last September Sam Tucker and Doğan Eraslan spent a morning clearing the rubbish on one of the promontories that overlook Fethiye Bay. The Municipality went along to support and put up new signage. Click here to read the full article.

A beach clean up was organised in Çalış last month and once again, locals and the Municipality team worked together to make the beach beautiful again.

What else has happened?
A local business owner, Süleyman Akbay, has joined the project. Süleyman is the owner of Oceanwide Properties and is passionate about the environment as well as having a very positive view of social responsibility.

The Türkiye’yi Temiz Tut team met with Fethiye Çevre Koruma ve Kontrol Müdürlüğü and their new manager, Hatice Kabak, last week. Ways to work together were discussed and agreed.
What’s next?
Mick has recently launched his “Nominate a Friend and Help the Environment” campaign
Help the Environment ! Pick up a bag of rubbish, post a picture and Nominate a friend or a few friends to do the same. I NOMINATE Melanie Argent and Tanyeli Scarsbrook
Posted by Mick Scarsbrook on Friday, January 5, 2018
Next time you pick up rubbish, wherever you are, take a photograph and nominate a friend to do the same.
We are delighted to say that the campaign has also spread to Dalyan.
Türkiye’yi Temiz Tut organised activities will take place on:
International Day of Forests – 21 March 2018
Sea Shore Savers with the Çalış Kids Club – 29 April 2018
World Environment Day – 5 June 2018
Watch out for details over the coming weeks.
How can you help?
We need motivated and determined people, who care about the environmet and have positive suggestions and ideas, to be part of Türkiye’yi Temiz Tut.
