Road between Antalya and Kumluca  closed due to a landslide

A stretch of road between Kumluca and Antalya is closed after a landslide on Monday.

According to information received from the authorities, the repair work will cost 2 trillion TL (yes trillion!) and the road will remain closed for three months.

Vehicles travelling between Kumluca and Antalya are being diverted through Yazır Mahallesi. Heavy and long vehicles are diverted via Elmalı and Korkuteli.

12 suspects detained in connection with alleged prostitution

12 suspects were detained in an operation carried out by Fethiye Security Directorate of Combatting Smuggling and Organised Crimes and Combatting Migrant and Human Trafficking Group under the coordination of the Provincial Security Directorate

Four of the 12 suspects detained in connection with the alleged prostitution of foreign nationals in Muğla’s province of Fethiye were arrested.

Eight of the 12 suspects, who were referred to the judiciary following the court proceedings, were released without charge.

Boat disappears between Fethiye and Bodrum

A boat disappeared whilst sailing from Fethiye to Bodrum on Friday.

Shortly before the boat disappeared, the Coast Guard received a distress call saying “We are sinking”

The owner, İsmail Murat Edirnecik along with Atilla Dundar left for Bodrum on the Fethiye registered boat, experiencing difficulties approximately 3.5 miles from Sarıgerme.

The Coast Guard and gendarmerie who received the distress call were immediately dispatched to the scene, however, were unable to locate the boat.

The search for the two missing persons along with the 7.5-meter long boat continues.

27 percent of Turkey’s population live in high-risk earthquake areas

27 percent of Turkey’s population live in areas that carry the highest earthquake risk, Deputy Prime Minister Recep Akdağ said during a symposium organized by the Prime Ministry Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) in Ankara on Thursday.

Akdağ said 26 percent of all buildings were also situated in these areas but not all were at risk. “Houses built before 1990 are particularly at risk,” Akdağ said.

“The focus should be on improving existing buildings. Turkey has upgraded its ‘risk map’ and developed a software program that helps authorities assess potential risks in almost every land plot, information that helps to build safer buildings,” he said.

The minister also called on people to take out catastrophe insurance (DASK), noting that only 48 percent of houses are currently covered by the insurance scheme.

Akdağ reiterated that Istanbul had the highest risk.

“Areas that facilitate a faster response to earthquakes will be created and the number of response teams will increase,” Akdağ said, noting that the first 72 hours is crucial after disaster strikes and that proper logistics infrastructure should be in place for an effective response.

“The AFAD currently has well-trained 2,000 rescue personnel but this is not enough. Between 2018 and 2019 some 20,000 firefighters across the country will receive training to respond to natural disasters and other crises besides fires,” the minister said.

Akdağ mentioned efforts by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and the Housing Development Administration (TOKİ) aimed at improving risk-prone buildings and called on citizens to support and take part in those efforts.

In November 2017, Environment and Urbanization Minister Mehmet Özhaseki warned of the danger of “mass casualties” in the event of a strong earthquake in İstanbul.

“Scientists say a massive earthquake will hit Istanbul at some point between 2030 and 2040. They say a 7.0 magnitude earthquake will strike Istanbul,”

Turkish Airlines flights to and from London, Dublin, Edinburgh cancelled due to heavy snowfall

Turkish Airlines cancelled its London, Edinburgh and Dublin-bound flights out of Istanbul due to heavy snowfall in the destinations on Thursday.

Persistent snow and freezing conditions from a Siberian cold snap caused a handful of deaths across a swathe of Europe from Britain to the Balkans, the Associated Press reported.

The worst weather since 1991, it trapped several hundred motorists on roads in Scotland, closing thousands of schools and grounding planes.

With up to 90 cm of snow and temperatures as low as minus 10.3 Celsius, Scotland, Britain and Ireland issued their most severe red warnings advising people to stay at home as travel is too dangerous.
