For their 2018 Travelers Choice Awards, Trip Advisor has named Istanbul, the 9th best destination in the world. The boost to its tourism reputation will be welcomed by many travel industry experts on Turkey who are expecting 2018 to be a record year for tourism.

Over the last two years, Turkey and its main tourism hub, Istanbul, suffered when tourists stayed away due to security concerns and an attempted coup.

About the Travelers Choice Awards

Every year, Trip Advisor releases its Travelers Choice Awards based on user ratings and reviews. Separating the travel industry into sectors like airlines, hotels, landmarks and attractions, Trip Advisor also names the most popular destinations. They say….

“Travelers’ Choice awards are the highest honour TripAdvisor can bestow. Based on millions of reviews and opinions from travellers around the world, these annual awards reflect “the best of the best” for service, quality, and customer satisfaction, from hotels and accommodations to destinations, attractions, and even brands and products.”

Awarding Istanbul 9th position for the best destination in the world is one of three Trip Advisor awards for Turkey for 2018. They also named the Kayakapi Cave hotel in Cappadocia as the 12th best hotel in the world and Cleopatra’s beach in Alanya, 19th place on the world’s best beaches list.

Trip Advisor Says Istanbul is the 9th Best Destination in the World

2017 was a difficult year for Turkey as they completely slipped off the Travelers Choice Award list. In 2014, Istanbul received top place on the Destinations Travellers Choice award beating the likes of Rome, London and Beijing.

In 2015, it was also ranked by annual Mastercard Global Destinations cities index as the fifth most visited city in the world.

The re-emergence of Istanbul onto the top destinations list confirms industry statements that the Turkish tourism industry is making a comeback.

Istanbul Tourism

In 2017, 10,730,510 tourists visited and enjoyed the delights of Istanbul. Accounting for 33% of the country’s tourism industry, it ranks as the top visited destination in Turkey. Most of those visitors arrived via the airports, with a small number also entering via seaports.

These figures are expected to rise, with the Turkish Government giving cruise ship companies monetary incentives to return back to the country. The opening of Istanbul’s new third airport in October of 2018 is also expected to increase flight schedules and destinations, making it easier than ever before for business and leisure travellers to explore Istanbul.
