What’s that unusual cloud?

The appearance of a UFO-like cloud hanging over Fethiye had locals rushing for their cameras on Monday. The cloud, with its very definite saucer-like appearance, was a rare Lenticular cloud.

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 07 April 2018

Lenticular clouds have been regularly confused for UFOs throughout history due to their smooth, round or oval lens-shaped structure. The clouds are not uncommon, but are most regularly found near mountainous areas and can appear singular or stacked like pancakes.

According to AccuWeather Meteorologist Jesse Ferrell, lenticular clouds are formed when air moves over mountains, cooling sufficiently for condensation to take place. Lenticular clouds are different from other clouds because they don’t move, he said.

“They are continually reformed over the same location by new air rising up and over a mountain, condensing and producing the clouds,” Ferrell said.

Tanker collides into waterfront mansion in Istanbul’s Bosphorus

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 07 April 2018

A tanker crashed into a historic mansion on the shores of Istanbul’s Bosphorus on Saturday after its steering equipment locked.

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 07 April 2018

Towboats and coast guard vessels were sent to the area after the crash and the “Vitaspirit” tanker, carrying a Maltese flag, was pulled back from the crash site and brought to shore.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, but footage from the crash showed extensive damage to the historic seaside mansion located under the Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridge, one of the three crossings between Istanbul’s Asian and European sides.

The Hekimbaşı Salih Efendi Mansion has stood on the shores of the Bosphorus Strait since the 18th century and is used to host weddings and concerts, according to the mansion’s website.

The Bosphorus is one of the world’s most important routes for maritime oil transports, with more than 3 percent of global supply – mainly from Russia and the Caspian Sea – passing through the 17-mile waterway connecting the Black Sea to the Mediterranean.

It is also used by vessels carrying grain from Russia and Kazakhstan to international markets.
