There have been a number of sightings of a spermwhale in the Gulf of Fethiye this week.
The whale, estimated to weigh two tonnes, was first spotted by fishermen near Kızılada (Red Island).
Dr. Halit Filiz, faculty member of the Fisheries Faculty and Professor of Fisheries Basic Sciences, that the whale is a “kaşalot” or “speemwhale”, a very rare sight indeed in these waters.
Experts say that the whale may have lost its way and ended up in Fethiye and there are concerns that, if it can’t find its way to its regular feeding grounds, it may die.

Turkey’s central bank intervened to halt the free fall of the Turkish lira on Wednesday, but it isn’t clear whether policy makers will be able to stave off a full-fledged currency crisis.
Turkey’s central bank hiked its key interest rate by 300 base points on Wednesday, and managed to stabilize its ailing currency. The late liquidity window lending rate, which is the rate local financial institutions can borrow at, was pushed to 16.5% from 13.5%. The country has been under pressure from a weakening currency, double-digit inflation and a government critical of the central bank.
The U.S. dollar had rallied to a historic high against Turkey’s lira USDTRY, -0.0064% on Wednesday, buying 4.9233 lira at the high. In the year to date, the Turkish currency has dropped more than 20% against the dollar, according to FactSet data.
The euro-lira pair EURTRY, -0.5473% behaved similarly, first rallying to an all-time high but paring the rise after the rate increase. The euro last bought 5.5084 lira. The US and Eurozone are two of Turkey’s most important trading partners.

A plane that made the headlines after skidding off the runway at the airport in the Black Sea province of Trabzon in January may be converted into a library.
On Jan. 13, the Pegasus Airlines Boeing 737-800 that had taken off smoothly from the capital Ankara made a normal landing at Trabzon Airport, but then went off the runway just meters from the waters of the Black Sea and got its wheels stuck in the mud. Luckily, no one was injured or killed in the accident.
The plane, named “Zeynep,” has been awaiting its fate at the airport since the day of the accident. The plane has undergone a technical examination by the insurance company and experts, and a decision made that the plane will not be put back into service.
The Trabzon Municipality has started an initiative to convert the plane into a library but this was refused by Pegasus Airlines. The municipality then made a second request, to which they are still awaiting a decision.
According to the municipality’s plans, the “library plane” will be installed on a 800,000-square meter area of land in Trabzon’s Akyazı neighbourhood.
