The Local Seed Production and Swap Project was started 5 years ago by volunteers at the association of Republican Women of Fethiye (Cumhuriyet Kadınları Derneği) and is headed up by Ebru Oğuzhan Yeter (pictured below)

How does the project work?
The aim of the project is to promote production and growth from local seeds which are free from any harmful chemicals.
Currently there are 12 participating farmers who swap these local seeds, without payment, to asist each other. The aim is to expand this to other farmers. Any new farmer looking to join the project goes through various checks to ensure their land is suitable and a farming engineer (who is also a volunteer) checks the process from planting the seeds until ripe to ensure they reach the Standard required.
Only completely natural products are used in the production ensuring the fruit and vegetables are completely natural and healthy.

To support these local farmers an event was held on Saturday at the Culture Centre in Fethiye. Local farmers attended selling a selection of seasonal fruit and vegetables grown within the guidelines laid down in the project.

The event was attended by Fethiye Mayor, Behçet Saatcı, who took samples of the produce, to be checked by experts to make sure that no chemicals have been used. The samples checked all came back with a clean bill of health.

The event included presentations in Turkish and English explaining in more detail what the project entails.
The presentations were followed by lively folk dances, local singers and bands.

Where can you buy this produce?
Come and do your weekly shopping from these farmers – they do need your support.
You can find them every week at the Friday market in Fethiye. The stalls will be displaying the sign “Yerel Tohum”
If the project becomes successful, the Mayor had promised to allocate a separate location for the farmers to sell their produce.
