The children from Calis Kids Club made their annual visit to see Kaptan June and the turtles on Saturday at Iztuzu beach Dalyan.

Seashore savers make a unique presentation

The children presented her with a turtle batik painting they had made following their earlier beach cleanup in Calis and a mobile of turtles made from glass collected from the beach and other recycled items.

Plastic bags or jelly fish?

The children listened as Kaptan June told them how she had been on the beach helping to save this environmentally important area for the turtles for the last 32 years.

She explained the life cycle of the turtles and the importance of clearing up our rubbish as the turtles love to eat jellyfish and that’s exactly what plastic bags look like in the water!

Propellor guards

She also told them about the importance of encouraging boat owners to use propeller guards, which are supplied by Kaptan June, to stop the sea and river turtles from being horribly injured by propeller strike.

Please don’t feed the sea turtles

She also explained that “turtle feeding” trips were very bad for the turtles.

This is because it encourages them to come too close to the boats, where they can be injured by the propellers.

As well as associating humans with food and this is very bad for wild animals in general.

The children also visited the turtle hospital and then had a picnic lunch followed by games on the beach and a swim, before returning to Calis.

The children are very keen to help the turtles and keep our beaches safe for them for now and in the future.
