Death Toll in Turkey’s Istanbul Building Collapse Rises to 21
The official death toll from a horrific building collapse in Istanbul has risen to 21.
The eight-story building in Istanbul’s mostly-residential Kartal district collapsed on Wednesday.
Friends and relatives waited near the wreckage for news of their missing loved ones as emergency teams, aided by sniffer dogs, worked around the clock to reach possible survivors.
One man said he lost nine members of his extended family. “We have nine losses. My elder brother, our siblings, our children are all gone,” Alemdar, 43, told The Associated Press. “This is beyond imagination.”
The eight-story building was originally built as a five-story building in 1992 and the top three floors were illegally added in later years. There was also a textile workshop on the ground floor of the building that was operating without a license.
Reports noted that some of the load-bearing columns at the bottom of the building had been removed, which is believed to be one of the reasons for its collapse.
Another building next to the collapsed one, which was evacuated shortly after the incident will be demolished as an investigation revealed it may also collapse, reports said.
A total of seven risky buildings have been evacuated after the incident.
Istanbul prosecutors have launched an investigation into the incident.

“Life comes first, pedestrians come first.”
The Turkish Ministry of the Interior has launched a public campaign across the country to raise awareness on protecting pedestrians in traffic and promoting better use of pedestrian crossings.
Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu said in Ankara on Wednesday
“A total of 7,427 people died in traffic accidents in 2017 and 1,681 of them were pedestrians. The state will do what is necessary to prevent traffic accidents. Penalties for traffic deaths cannot be limited to imposing fines”
Activities were held around Turkey on Wednesday as part of the “Life comes first, pedestrians come first” campaign.
In Fethiye, informative brochures were distributed to drivers by police traffic crews. They were joined by District Governor, Muzaffer Şahiner who also used the pedestrian crossing to demonstrate safely crossing the road.
An October 2018 amendment to the law on road traffic prioritised the rights of the pedestrians.

Irish tourist sentenced to eight years for stealing a $40,000 diamond in Turkey
An Irish tourist was sentenced to eight years and nine months for attempting to steal a diamond ring worth $40,000 from a jewelry store in Turkey’s southern Muğla province on 4 October.
Ian Cambell, who attempted to steal the 2.5 carat diamond ring by swallowing it, was convicted by the 4th Criminal Court of General Jurisdiction in Marmaris and sentenced to 8 years and 9 months in prison for “qualified theft.”
The $40,000 ring was finally removed with a surgical procedure, with the permission of Campbell.
Cambell’s lawyer said he will appeal the ruling.
