On Thursday 14 February, members of the FIG Management team were delighted to pay a return visit to Ölüdeniz primary school in Hisarönü to catch up with the Head Teacher, Bülent Kılıç and teaching assistant Aslı.
In early January, FIG visited the school to better understand a request for some financial support to help complete work on a new classroom. The team were very impressed by this lovely school and agreed to provide support to complete the classroom. They also agreed to purchase some sporting goods and games to benefit the children’s education and social development.
The FIG team agreed to use the majority of the funds received from the Soul Train 2 event for this project.
Aslı was terrific as the work progressed, keeping FIG in the loop throughout with progress photos and keeping track of the expenditure.
A new classroom and sports gear
Everyone agreed that it would be great to see the completed classroom so members of the management team from FIG plus George Rimmer and his wife Christine headed to the school again.
They were warmly welcomed with çay and pastries along with lovely smiles from some of the pupils.
The team were shown the selection of balls for basketball, volleyball and netball plus some skipping ropes for playground fun and games that had been supplied by FIG. These are all sports that help boost social interaction and team working from a young age.

Next was a visit to the completed classroom, which is now a truly lovely and very well equipped chess room.

The school explained that teaching chess to primary children is on the school curriculum in Turkey as it develops strategic thinking and aids mental development. As you can see from the photographs, the class room is very well done and is now used for official chess lessons and the newly formed chess club which already has 65 pupils signed up as members.

The money FIG (and Soul Train 2) provided was used to pay for the flooring, the correct teaching chess desks, chairs and decor plus new blinds and books for the recently completed school library.

Leamington Hibernians donate football kits for local schools
At the end of last year, we brought you an article about football kits that had been donated earlier in the year by UK football club, Leamington Hibernians.
In November 2018, FIG donated the 9-12 years kits to Silkar Günlükbaşı Ortaokulu (Middle School).
The FIG management team also presented the school with the football kits for ages 5-8.
