Çağla – Fethiye’s unripe almonds are the first sign of spring

FETHIYE’S markets are already selling kilos of something considered to be such a delicacy and a sign that spring is has arrived that Turkish people will go out of their way to buy them. But what are they?

If you happen to be wandering around one of Fethiye’s colourful, vibrant markets at this time of year, don’t be surprised if you see piles of an oval, hard, slightly furry green produce, which look rather like unripe almonds – because that is exactly what they are.

A short-lived but delicious treat

Çağla [pronounced chala] badem, are a considered to be a real treat and during their very short season people go out of their way to find them.

Served up with a pinch of salt, they are a sign that spring is really here, or at least just around the corner…

Love em or hate em

For foreign palates unused to such tart flavours çağla are often considered to be an acquired taste but don’t turn your nose up at them, you never know, you may end up loving them as much as your Turkish friends and neighbours.
