Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 05 October 2019

Fethiye Mayor, Alim Karaca, has reminded the government of their pre-election promise to clean the Gulf of Fethiye.

During a visit to Fethiye in March this year, Environment and Urban Planning Minister, Murat Kurum said in a speech,“Unfortunately, Fethiye Bay is in a very bad condition, and we have made our findings here. We will launch a 250 million TL project to clean the Gulf of Fethiye.” Kurum likened it to the Golden Horn, a major urban waterway and the primary inlet of the Bosphorus in Istanbul. He said “The Golden Horn was in a worse condition that the Gulf of Fethiye. The government has cleaned the the Golden Horn and today it has become a place where fish can see and breathe. We will do the same in Fethiye”

This week in a statement, Karaca said “ There has been a serious problem in the Gulf of Fethiye for months. We have been working to solve this problem by organizing studies with many academicians since the day we took office. We now have some good news. As a result of the findings of the investigation carried out by seven professors from the Gazi University, a letter has been written by the Ministry demanding TL 290 million to clean the bay. We will go to President Erdoğan if necessary.

This year, we will begin cleaning the bay. In this 5-year period, we want to offer you a clean bay. I hope we all swim together in the Gulf of Fethiye ”.

Screengrab from United States Geological Survey shows the location of the 5.1 magnitude earthquake in the Mediterranean Sea.

Last week, Turkey’s most populous city Istanbul was shaken by a 5.8-magnitude earthquake, injuring eight people and causing panic across the city.

This week, a number of earthquakes have rattled south-western Turkey.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 struck in the Mediterranean sea, off the coast of western Turkey on Thursday. The quake struck at a depth of 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) at 7:44 a.m. local time. Its epicenter was located 58 kilometers (36.03 miles) away from the Fethiye district of Muğla province. The quake was also felt in Dalaman, Köyceğiz and Marmaris.

Another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 struck the Datça district of Muğla on Friday.

A third quake with a magnitude of 4.3 struck off the coast of the Marmaris district in Muğla province at 17:51 p.m. local time on Saturday. The epicenter of the earthquake was specified as 75 kilometers away from the district center, at a depth of approximately 45 kilometers in the Mediterranean Sea.

No casualties or damage were reported.

Turkish Airlines has stepped in to raise capacity to one of the main Thomas Cook holiday gateways in the country.

The national carrier has added 20% more seats on its daily service from Gatwick to Antalya on the Turkish turquoise coast for October.

The airline also allows passengers to carry one full set of diving equipment free of charge on the route. Antalya is home to Turkey’s first and only underwater museum.

Turkish Airlines’ London-based general manager Celal Baykal said: “Antalya has had a fantastic summer, with thousands of Britons jetting off for a chance to enjoy the gateway to Turkey’s picturesque riviera. With demand remaining high throughout September and into October, increasing capacity on the route made complete sense as we are eager to give as many people as possible the chance to widen their world and explore Antalya.”

Fethiye Times News – Week Ending 05 October 2019
Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak said in line with the government targets, Turkey left behind a major stage in the fight against inflation.

The stable performance of the Turkish lira, falling prices and structural steps by the government have led to a sharp decrease in September inflation, hitting below 10% for the first time in 26 months

Data released on Thursday by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) revealed that inflation dropped to 9.79%, the first time it has hit single digits since July 2017.

The steep decline in inflation, which has become a pressing issue for the Turkish economy in the last year, was the result of expanded efforts, a more stable lira, lowering demand and the fading effect of last year’s price spike. Last month, annual inflation went down 5.75 percentage points from 15.01% in August. More here…
