After the most recent announcements from the president last night, today seemed like a good time to stop and take a look at exactly where we are with the virus in Turkey and clarify what measures have been taken so far.
COVID-19 Turkey
Speaking after a meeting of ministry’s Coronavirus Science Board, Health Minster Fahrettin Koca announced the most recent figures last night.
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Turkey is now 20,921 and the total number of fatalities now stands at 425 with 484 people recovered and 1,250 people in intensive care.
COVID-19 Fethiye
In a press release yesterday, Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca announced the most recent figures for Fethiye.
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Fethiye is now 5, with another 8 symptomatic patients awaiting test results. The total number of fatalities stands at 1.
Most recent measures to curb the spread
President Erdogan announced a curfew restricting members of the public under age 20 (born after Jan. 1, 2000) from leaving their homes unless absolutely necessary. The curfew was effective from midnight.
The wearing of face-masks in crowded areas including stores is now mandatory
He also announced a 15-day ban on vehicles leaving or entering 31 provinces. Here is a list of the provinces.

The new restrictions are as well as those already in place
Air and land borders are closed.
People who are older than 65 and/or suffer from chronic illnesses are not allowed to leave their homes. The curfew age has not yet been reduced to over 60.
The gathering of crowds in all open spaces, including streets, is not allowed.
Schools, cafes, bars, nightclubs, restaurants, movie theaters, libraries, gyms and similar venues are closed. The school curriculum is now being delivered via remote classes.
Sports events are cancelled.
All public transport vehicles are allowed to carry only half their capacity. There must be an empty seat between passengers. As yet, there has been no official notification that this applies to private vehicles, although social distancing guidelines should be followed.
Grocery stores will only provide service between 09:00 and 21:00.
Only a certain number of people (one tenth of its original number) will be allowed to shop at one time, depending on the size of the store.
Bank working hours are reduced to 12:00 – 17:00.
Beauty salons, hair dressers, barbers are closed.
Picnic spots, parks, forests, archeological sites, beaches and kordon areas are closed.
Fishing at shores is banned.
Barbecuing in gardens, parks and promenades is banned.
Inter-city travelers are being tested for high fever and coughing, with systems set up at borders of cities.
There is a nationwide ban on prayer gatherings in mosques, including Friday prayers.
New restrictions are being introduced every couple of days and we will keep this list up to date.
Stay Home
These are unprecedented times and governments everywhere are introducing measures to curb the spread of the virus – and they are are battling on a daily basis to enforce these measures.
(Whilst I’m sitting writing this – listening to Heart FM – the UK Prime Minister, has just put out an appeal for people to stay at home this weekend during the unusually warm weather. And the UK is under lockdown.)
The Governor’s office, the Mayor’s office, jandarma, police, ambulance services and many more are working extremely hard to deliver and enforce these measures, and they only have their normal resources
